Exercising while injured - need some advice

Hey everyone, brand new here, as you can see. Overweight 18 year old who wants to get fit again, blah blah blah, I'll put all the details in the diary once I've put it together. For the moment, however...

I know that the best way to lose weight is with a proper diet, and exercise. However, I have a few...debilitations at the moment [as well as explaining why I'm overweight]

I need to find a gentle exercise that I can do with a gimpy leg - the knee has some cartilage damage, and just below the knee I'm still recovering from a soft tissue injury caused by me getting tetanus after I fell on a water fountain. Swimming's probably the best idea...but I hate it, and I'm terrible at swimming. Spending money on swimming lessons isn't something I'm prepared to do, as I really hate it, even if I was good at it. Almost drowned once...put me off swimming for life, I think.

I know losing weight will do wonders for my bad knee, and speed up the healing for the leg, but I can't do it just by diet. Tried and failed that.

Any ideas?

Well, first thing would be listen to your doc for what you can and can't do. I'd imagine you could weight train from the hips up if the knee is totally off limits to load bearing exercise. There's also cardio that can be done that's all upper body. Tho you might want to cosnider, if you're healing, ask if dieting is the best course right now, your doc may advise you to lay off for a bit. if your body is looking for energy and resources to heal, where's it going to find it while in a calorie deficit?

I've more than enough fat stored for energy, and I don't intend to stop eating carbs or protien, just laying low on the unhealthies for a while, though you do make a very good point. The injury - puncture wound from falling on a fountain, is pretty much healed. It's all scar tissue now, starting getting feeling back in it this week, it's about 6 months old now. Just that it's still much too tender to play the sports I wanted to be playing right now, need some ideas for aerobic exercises I can do that're either gentle on my knee, or are all upper body [that isn't swimming.] I tried biking, but I can barely walk for about a day after, heh.

Ah gotcha, for something like that, you might want to check with a physical therapist if you can swing the payments. They can also give you exercises to rehab your knee in a lot quicker time that you'd imagine. so you can get back to the full body stuff.

Might not lke swimming, but they have some of the swimming pool exercise classes, where you' rejust up to your chest and standing on the bottom of the pool. good stuff at times, and supports the joints.
