Exercising at home

Hi everyone. I have been exercising at home and I am starting to see an improvement. I am a very skinny guy, so I hope to build some muscle, become stronger, gain a better posture and make my arms look bigger.

I have been mainly doing pushups, and today was probably my best day with 5 sets of 25. But, what i think is a problem, when i want to go and do my next set it takes a LOT to push myself to do them. Even starting exercise for the day, I just don't seem real motivated, even though I want to.
But back to the thing i really want to ask. As it takes a lot, for me, to do another set, it may take 5 minutes or more between sets. I have read you should only take a minute or 2 break. Does having these huge breaks affect anything? Does it reduce the building muscle process?

Thanks Everyone!

Hey Alex,
I understand what you mean by the lack of motivation, because I too had the same issue. But what I have found is, once I started seeing results, it motivated me to push myself further. Now as for breaks, I wouldn't take longer than a minute at most between your sets! Also, try doing different varieties of pushups as well. Such as military, wide, slow down then slow up, even going from doing them on your palms to your knuckles can really make a deifference! Keep at it and mix up your routine every couple of weeks! Also, dont forget to work your biceps either. Maybe get a couple of dumbells and do a few sets of curls!! Keep it up buddy!!

Hi Alex,

I agree with Jeff. Over time, as you progress, the motivation becomes natural. As for your 5 min spaces, you do need to get that time down, and keep a momentum. You might have to either regress the number of push-ups per set or alternate with other exercises in a circuit style. Like that instead of taking a break, your working on another area while your arms refresh for the next set.

Thanks guys. Yea I have been thinking of gettting dumbells, just thinking what weight I should get.
I think I might start playing music again, I felt that kept those break spaces down.
I do some other exercises in between, but my main focus is push-ups/arms, but I'm starting to like the idea of a 6-pack :p
I do about 10 crunches per workout. i read that doing 10-20 good crunches is better than doing like 100-200 quick ones where you don't strain the muscles. Is that true?

Absolutely true. When working out a muscle you want to work the full range of its contraction.

As for rostering muscles, there's a rule common amongst gyms. Thats the push, pull, legs roster. So, the case of your arms, that would be push ups(exercises that involve chest and triceps are push exercises) followed by either chin-ups/pull ups, bicep curls, lat pulldowns (back muscles and biceps are the pulls).

And for abs, lately i've been reading countless threads emphasising on cardio to achieve a 6 pack. Apparently we all have a 6-8 pack, just that some of us don't have the fat to hide it. Personally, i prefer working my core for function and strength. :)

Thanks for the info! I'm going to try and lay off the junk food (which I love so much :( ) and try and find the 6 pack :p
And my breaks in between sets has decreased :) I just need some weight now so i can work on biceps
