Exercise Without Machines?

I've got myself in a dilemma. Some days I'm just stuck at home and I can't hit my gym where I've got the treadmills and elliptycals. There's no where to really run so what do I do? Just looking for ideas or suggestions. What do you guys do for exercise at home?

is it too cold to walk outside? if you have stairs you could walk up and down those. for weights, you could use gallons of milk or water. you could also do squats and crunches. do you have a jump rope? 6 minutes of jumping rope is like 20 minutes of jogging! or you could always jog in place.

Do you ever try any workout tapes? Taebo has an eight minute workout and it is really killer...really works ya....or you could do the walk away the pounds with leslie sansome. Its a half an hour long and its walking in place...the 30 minutes go really fast.

I downloaded Tae Bo yesterday actually! It's fricken hard stuff! Haha.. you have to fool around a couple times before you aactually get the tape.. plus I'm watching it from a computer screen so no wonder it's so hard to folloow... I'm squinting all the time. Thanks for that though - I'm gonna check out some tapes either today or tomorrow! And jump rope... I can't believe what a workout that is either! Damn... that's how as kids we always stayed so fit when we were young hey?

I started jump roping in my back yard in the mornings, hella difference!! also, you could get some of the resistance tubes and when your watching tv you could hook em under your feet and do curls, that way at least your doing something while hangin out :)

Super leg workout when at home :D

Hey liz you should try doing sumo squats.. they make you laugh and increase strength and flexibility... here's how:

1. start with feet about shoulder width apart with toes pointed slightly outward.

2. now just sit down towards the ground keeping your back straight and head up, until your thighs are parallel to the floor.

3. now stand up and bring your left toe to the right (kinda like a ballerina)

4. kick out to the left and meet your toe/shin with your left hand and come back to feet shoulder width apart.

5. Squat back down and repeat with right.

These are a doosie... but you will definetly get you heart rate up if you do them fast enough... they also stimulate the legs muscles.. which are big and burn lots of calories :D.

EXERCISE THAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? That's perfect! Haha.. thanks - I'll try those after I actually am 'awake'! :D

I'm standing in the salon right now trying the Sumo Squats... I think everyone ELSE is laughing! ;)
Have you ever used exercise bands? They are awesome for toning and I can give you a complete body workout if you're interested. Also, one of my favorite things to do when I was counting steps (back to that on Monday) was to step and walk around my living room while watching TV. It's really simple. You just need a step stool from your local Wal Mart or whatever. Put it in the living room, turn on your favorite show and start stepping up and down. Do different things that you might do if you were in a step class if you're feeling creative. Then when your heart rate is really high and you feel like you need a break, step down and walk a few laps around your living room until you feel ready to get back on the step. Do this for 30-60 minutes. Time flies by cuz you're watching you're watching TV the whole time. :)

I do all my workouts from home! I do workout dvd's, lift dumbbells, pushups, crunches, lunges, squats.....there is so much you can do at home. Just get a few dumbbells, stability ball and dvds and you will be set!

This is a great thread! I was just about to post a new one asking for tips about working out at home. I can't afford a gym membership and I'm moving out of the country this summer, so I really needed some budget exercise tips for the home. Great tips!

I don't go to the gym either. I have workout tapes from the Firm series going all the way back to when they first came out. They're really good workouts - and I alternate them so I never get bored. They range anywhere from 30 min - 65 min and each workout focuses on a different area while still giving you a total body workout. God, I sound like an infomercial..lol. You'd probably have to look for the older tapes on Amazon.com or sites like that, but you may even be able to get them from the Firm's website. I found the first tapes they came out with at a thrift store for 99 cents each. You can check them out if you like - the site is .

Dumbells are great. You can work every muscle group and they are very effective. In addition, they're small, so if you don't have much space, they're perfect. There are some variations of selectorized dumbells. That way you have an entire dumbell series, but only take up the space required by a single pair. With a set of those and an adjustable, incline bench, there's almost nothing you can't do.
