Exercise Snag - Equipment Weight Limit! :(

Ok umm.. kinda embarassing but I don't care at this point. Last I was told, I weighed 420. Shocking - yes. However, that is one of the reasons I am here.

My problem? Well, we had this treadmill bought new - sat in the box for over a year. Took it out and assembled it a few days ago. I was hyped and ready to use it. However, here is the problem. Weight limit is 300lbs. I was pissed.

How am I suppose to loose weight if all the exercise equipment has weight limits? With that, I decided to start walking to get my weight down. That is just going to take way too long. I need a treadmill or an elliptical. I looked at an elliptical and its weight limit was 250.

Ok.. so why have equipment to loose weight if the people that need it can't use it??

Question is - what do I do? Anyone here ever disregard the weight limit anyway and use the equipment? How is it working out? I need some suggestions on this if anyone has any.

Its really discouraging.

when i first got my exercise bike, at 370ish lbs - the weight limit said 250lbs - it was a nordic track so it was good equipment - it didnt ever collapse under my weight...

but you could also take your walking outside... don't knock walking as a great form of exercise - do it consistantly and the weight will come off...

Yeah.. walking is great - its just I am more movitvated when I am using a treadmill or equipment. I will do it longer.

I might get the elliptical and try it out. What do I have to lose. Spend 150 bux, it breaks - but if it lasts a few months it will be worth it.

Just really hard to get equipment if it has weight limits. If anyone has ever put a treadmill together, those damn things are heavy! Suprised they don't hold more :)

a 150 dollar elliptical i wouldn't expect to do much of anything - perhaps look at better quality used equipment (check craig's list and the local want ads for people unloading them) you do get what you pay for - and if you get quality equipment it will holdup.

Well, I was reading about this one.. Weslo 620

From the reviews and comments I have read about - it is a great piece of equipment for the price. Did I read wrong? Do let me know. If there is something better that will hold up, I am all ears!

the weight limits posted on these various types of equipment are generally to cover the manufacturer's butts in the legal and warranty departments. I have used them at over 400 pounds and never had any issue. Since you will be doing mostly low impact stuff on them till you get your weight down, you probably still wont be exerting the same forces that a 300 pound person does at a full run, which is generally what the weight limit is in reference to.

i would recommend skipping out on the cheap elliptical and just walking on the treadmill for now.

however, just be careful that you arent using exercise for the wrong reasons and expecting too much out of it. i always get a little nervous when i see someone talk about speeding up results. you can lose weight at a safe and healthy pace, or you can lose it too fast and do more damage. exercise should be a factor in the first option, not as a means to extend the calorie deficit even farther beyond healthy ranges.

Thank you. That is kinda what I was thinking. I took a chance and got on it Monday and had no problems. I know I can't run on it and have no plans to. But it felt sturdy and fine when I was walking.

My goal is to exercise and eat healthy and loose weight. Not to starve myself.
