Exercise related, but might do better in another section

Hey all. I keep kicking back into the habit of lurking even though I have an account. I have a quick question, but first a reintroduction: last fall I got back into checking this site regularly as I was losing weight regularly. I was a member at a gym and had a much more flexible school schedule. This semester, more rigorous school schedule, and had to cancel the gym membership for financial reasons. About a month ago, my weight was back up to 259 so I started focusing on my eating habits and not exercising as much (once a week for an hour)and came down to 241 when I weighed myself last Friday morning. However, Friday night, I played tennis (poorly and amateurly) from 2-6 and when I weighed myself this morning, I was up to 245. What's going on? I'm keeping my deficet at 400cals a day, but why the sudden weight gain?

If you monitor your weight regularly you will see it go up and down even if the trend is downwards.

Imagine weighing yourself, then eat a meal and drink a pint of water. weigh yourself again - you just put 1.5 pounds on! No, you didn't - you've just taken refreshments on board.

Now the opposite scenario - weigh yourself. Now make a productive bathroom visit... Yep, you've suddenly lost 1.5 pounds - miracle diet!

You can see how your weight fluctuates according to when you take the readings. If you are not weighing yourself naked, what you are wearing also influences the readings.

What I do is to weigh myself every day and write the reading down. At the end of the week, I average the 7 readings and that's the number I take notice of. The daily fluctuations tend to get smoothed out by this method.

I hadn't thought of taking the average down. If I had just waited another week, I would've seen that I went down one more pound! I think I'll start taking weekly averages now. Great advice, thanks!
