everything is bad

Is it just me or does it seem like everthing is bad for you these days? Except maybe water. Just dont eat!
potatos are bad, canned foods are bad, processed foods are bad, I even heard juice is bad, bread is bad, pasta is bad, meat is bad... What IS okay to eat keeping in mind I have a limited income and also 5 kids and a hubby so its hard for me to buy myself separate food to eat. I like the little lean quisines and healthy choice tv dinners but for me to just eat those would add a considerable amount onto our food bill. I also like the arizona diet tea with is zero sodium, fat, calories, and everthing but it is almost 4 dollars a gallon. And i get sick of water. I think I could stick to a diet and excersize program much better if justsomehow I could see immidiate results. It seems like when I am very conscieous of my wieght and intake, I do even worse, eat even more. I dont know how to change. i guess it is like telling a smoker to just quit.

unfortunatelly there is no quick fix :( here in Croatia it is not very difficult to eat healthy, we're all here used to eat more vegetables, use olive oil etc. since i just started with losing weight and decided to help myself i really just try to eat integral stuff. integral or basmati rice, and pasta (pasta here is on the menu at least two times a weak, and not just in my house) and wholegrain bread. I decided not to eat bread. if i really feel like i need it then i take couple of integral crackers. but i eat everything else.
my biggest problems are sendwiches, so instead of putting all those things inside two pieces of bread i take one piece of cheese and wrap it around a piece of apple (parmiggiano and apple really go together) piece of salami with an olive and, a tomato with a bit of mozarella and i really try to convince myself i just had a small sandwich hehe. off course i don't do this every day. this is a treat for me :)
second thing. do you drink herbal teas? they really work if you know what to drink. i drink green tea every morning, and before i go to bed a have cammomile with a touch of cinnamon, which is veeeery relaxing and you sleep like a baby.
as for juices and all. i don't trust everything they say in the media. i believe everything is bad in eccesive amounts, even water.

Potatos are fine as long as you are consuming them at the right time of the day. Usually an hour or so following your weight training routine.

Potatoes aren't bad, it's what you put on them or how they are prepared. Baked or boiled potatoes are just fine. I like cold sliced baked potatoes sprinkled with seasonings, like onion powder and pepper, or dipped lightly in no-fat ranch dressing. Or a baked potato with broccoli bits and some grated cheese on top.

Processed food is not the best choice. Juice wouldn't be too bad if it doesn't have additives like high fructose corn syrup...but it is better to eat the whole fruit rather that the concentrated juice; more fiber and your body has to work harder to digest the calories. Whole grain bread and pasta, in moderation, is good for you, but it is usually harder to find and more expensive. Meat is OK too, if it's lean cuts and small portions... about the size of a deck of cards, which isn't very much.

I have saved plastic divided container from lean cuisines, and othe rfrozen brands, and used them to make my own frozen dinners with regular food that the rest of the family is eating. The key to those types of dinners is portion control. I like to make a big salad to go with the frozen dinners, so that I'm not feeling deprived.

Yeah, I agree. I don't listen to all of that crap they come up with. Anything is ok for you in moderation. But this is true: The healthiest things for you are natural, not processed. Like fruit, veggies, meats, eggs, dairy, etc.

I cant believe it I have talked my hubby into letting me try a "wieght watchers" diet. Not the actual plan or the club they have but just the meals they sell. I have a plan, and because I like those dinners and I am so misserable being fat, I actually think this one I can do. My plan is a nutra grain bar for breakfast a lean cuisine or smart ones dinner for lunch, another for dinner, and drink only diet tea wich has zero everything, or water. It also kind of makes me sad that he said yes because I know it is an expense we really dont need with our house full of kids but I think he is realizing I have a problem I cant solve without help. He use to always tell me not to worry, I wasnt fat, but I think he is starting to see how out of controll my problem has become. i think that is why he is willin to take on this extra expense without complaint when he never would agree to it before. I look in the mirror and I just cant believe this is me, this is what i have allowed myself to become, and it happened so fast.

that is cool........but you can eat healthy with out breaking the bank too!!! There is whole wheat pasta....tuna.....wheat bread....frozen veggies....cheap friut like bananas, black grapes, apples, oranges....lowfat dairy, in fact skim milk is usually cheaper then regular milk.....light Walmart brand Yogurts are only 48 cents a pop......lettuce is 98 cents a head.....there are tons of healthy ways to cook for cheap and it would be better for your family too.....I cook the same thing for my family that I eat.....my kids wont have the bad habbits or bad food issuse i have cuz they are eatin good now....they are so much better off because i have chosen a healthy diet for us all, and if your hubby supports you, he would probally be willing to eat healthyer too!!!!
good luck in what ever you choose!!!!

Exactly, T2 is right, who cares if you eat perfectly healthy? The important thing is that you exercise and have a calorie deficiency. You can eat whatever you want, just as long as its in moderation and you exercise.

This all depends on ones goals.

Of course. But in general, it just doesnt matter what you eat. But if you have major health problems, other than weight, or at least want to avoid it, then its definitely better to eat as healthy as possible.

For me, it is more then eating in moderation. That to me, is like telling a smoker to just quit. I need strick guidence and portion, and calorie controll. I like the lean cuisine and healthy choice meals because it is already right there portioned as it should be. I am a serious over eater. I have no controll. Of corse I know that I should just take a small peice of pie, but leave me and a pie alone for five minutes and only one of us will ever be seen again. I need to know exactly what I am allowed in a day and I need that separated and portioned. I dont eat because I am hungry, it's almost like a nervous tick or an itch that beggs to be scratched, a bad habit that wont die easy, but certainly NOT hunger. For some it might be as easy as moderation. Not for me.

tomephotos, forgive me if this sounds critical, but I think your plan to eat only a nutra grain bar for breakfast, and then two frozen diet dinners will back fire on you in the long run. It's not enough calories and your body will go into starvation mode and not burn calories efficiently. The plan might work if you add a glass of milk in the morning, add a big salad with one frozen meal, a piece of fruit, and some raw veggies and lo cal dip (or similar) for snacks.

I understand needing to have strict guidance and control. Have you looked at the online diet tool at ? It's free. After you sign up, you track your daily calories and your daily exercise. It's very helpful, check it out.

Thanks for the advice and I did end up adding a plain baked potatoe to my diet today, and I checked out the journal site. I found it discouraging that it said to meet my goal of 90 lbs loss in a year i need to loose near 2 lbs a week! It also said I was severely overweight, wich i guess I already knew but to see it on a graph is a downer. But it was interesting and maybe it will help keep me on my program.

I agree. You are not eating enough. If you try and do this diet, you will only feel deprived and end up quitting. Sorry to sound harsh, but it's true. I've been there, done that a thousand times.

Try eating 6 smaller meals a day. The trick is to eat slightly high protein, but not low carb. Make sure that any time you eat a carb, you eat protein with it> Here is an example day's diet for me ( I eat every three hours):

Meal #1: whole wheat crackers with peanut butter, and 8 oz skim milk
Meal #2: orange and 6 whole natural almonds
Meal #3: fresh spinach salad with chicken, hard boiled egg, various veggies, ff ranch
Meal #4: Baby carrots and low fat string cheese
Meal #5: 4 oz lean meat (chicken or steak or fish) 2 c steamed veggies, 1/2 cup whole wheat rice
Meal #6: kashi granola bar and low fat string cheese

Sometimes I have soup, a kashi freezer meal, different fruits and veggies, a sandwich on whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta with marinara and chicken, ff tostitos with salsa, etc in place of the above items.

You have to go on a diet that you can stick with for life, or it won't work. You have to make a lifestyle change, not just go on a crash diet. I've done the crash diet countless times, and it just doesn't work. You can do this! If I can, anyone can!

I really recommend coutning calories and getting exercise. It works!
