i promise i dont buy this rag, my other half does - for the sports coverage he says. but here is an article, which if true will put an end to the inconsistency in dress sizes us UK women find from shop to shop. something which has been talked about on this forum before.
"WOMEN’S dress sizes are to be scrapped — and replaced by bust and waist measurements.
The EU move is expected to halt the trend of girls trying to copy painfully thin size zero fashion models.
The new Europe-wide system would also clear up confusion about UK sizes — which vary from shop to shop — and stop women asking “Does my bum look big in this?”
It comes after the trend for US size zero — size 4 in the UK — spread into showbiz, with actresses like Renee Zellweger looking unnaturally skinny after dieting.
Euro bosses want to axe clothing sizes such as ten, 12 and 14 in Britain from next year.
They would be replaced with the same measurements across all EU countries — currently a UK size 12 can be 40 in France and 42 in Italy.
Size zero translates to a 26in hip. Size 12, like Kate Winslet, is 40ins and a 14, like Catherine Zeta Jones, is size 42.
Tops, dresses and skirts would carry labels stating bust, waist, hip and height measurements.
The move follows years of confusion about the UK size system. Consumer watchdog Which? says a size 14 bust measurement varies between shops by over an inch.
Women complain they can slip into size 12 trousers in one shop but need size 14 in another.
Retailers say their clothing ranges are designed to fit types of customer rather than standard measurements.
Frank Moore, of the European Committee for Standardisation, which is behind the new system, said it will be introduced on the Continent first. He added: “UK consumers will get used to it after seeing it there.” ""
