Hi guys,

I'm a newbe and wanted to start this off right. i'm about 5'5" and weigh in rite now at about 161.5 lbs. my goal is to lose 1.5 lbs per week and therefore be at my goal weight in about 5 months. I have reached the end of the line and have given up on anything other than the right way to lose weight. I am using fitday--have been for about a week and a half and it takes some effort, but i like it. i am an engineer so i like numbers, counting calories is perfect for figuring out what i need. i was thinking and have been doing about 1300 calories per day and getting a workout at the gym with half an hour medium-vigorous elliptical cardio with another half an hour of weights attatched. i think if i keep this up things will turn out good. i just need the self motivation to stay on track no matter what happens, which is why i am here. i have so many size 11 pants that i just want to squeeze into it's sad. but i have kept them there for a year and a half because i have never given up hope. the smalles i remember getting myself to ever was about 145--which is what i want to achieve and beat within this time period. any help and suggestions are more than welcome!

Hello and welcome to the forum!!! I love using fitday too...really keeps me in line. Good luck with everything and we're all here to help!

That sounds like a very reasonable goal you set for yourself :)
You should also keep track with your measurements as well. B/c even though you might not lose weight you'll probably be losing alot of inches! :D

Welcome!! Sounds like you have a great plan going, make sure you drink plenty of water too.

Dropping in to say hi....

*copy above line....moving to next diary to paste *:p
Silly 30-second bet posts rule! I'm running out of lunchtime!

alrighty, well i figured out on sat. morning that i lost another 1.5 lbs. so far so good, but of course i took a turn for the worst maxing between 1600-1800 cals sat and sun. i think i have an internal clock that says, wow let's work against you when you are just about to do well. anyways-looked at the situation and realized that i failed because i did not plan my weekend days out early in the day. rather, i just rolled with whatever i was feeling which led me to eat the bulk of my calories all at once-BIG MISTAKE. small portions are the key and i definitely need to plan ahead in order to avoid these feeding frenzies on the weekends. also, i noticed that once you start to overeat-your cravings return. i was doing so well last week that since i slowed/stopped the overeating it was easy to say no more often. i need to remember that. just hoping i didnt throw my goals out of wack. burned 500 cals on the elliptical this weekend -will try to burn as much as i can this week too to make up for it.

p.s.-WHY WATER?

i have been reading a lot of posts and everyone seems to be downing water like crazy. i always thought downing water was adding to water weight. then i think i read an article that said the contrary-that adding more water would relieve water weight from your system... i dont know what to think...any ideas?

hey there and welcome.
People gorge water for a bunch of different reasons. Some do it just because it's just good for you. Some do it because it keeps a lot of the toxins and salt from your system. Me...... I noticed I lose more weight when I'm drinking tons of water. I'm sure the answer is in a physics or a medical journal but I'm the only soon to be engineer that hates numbers lol....

Welcome. You have a reasonable calorie and exercise plan and a realistic weekly weight loss goal. Don't beat yourself up for the slip ups, just get up and keep going.

Last month I read this about water:

1. To function at its best, the body needs to be well-hydrated. Our bodies are largely composed of water – about 55-60% of body weight. It helps with many tasks including temperature regulation, cardiovascular function, waste product removal and metabolism.

4. The extreme opposite of dehydration can cause problems too. Ingesting large amounts of water without other added content (such as electrolytes, sugar, vitamins, etc.) can result in a medical complication known as hyponatremia. When too much plain water is ingested, large amounts of electrolytes (especially sodium) are transported from the blood and tissues into the small intestine, resulting in a dangerous electrolyte imbalance.

5. A small study has indicated that metabolic rate increases following water consumption by as much as 30% and is sustained for over an hour.1 The mechanism of the increased calorie burn is thought to be a combination of the energy needed to heat the ingested water and additional unknown factors. The long-term effect of increased water consumption and weight loss has not been studied.

thanx guys, i guess i'll try to get my 8 glasses and such this week, i'll see how it effects my weight loss. =-)

also-hillbillylee wat type of engineering-ps-i hated calc while i was in it!

fsaiidni I graduate in June and the field will be in electronics. I may go ahead and get my bachelors but all that is up in the air. I hated calc and trig. Most of the math and number crunching I do now is more basic and is almost becoming fun again.

alritey, i have no idea what i weigh, but i know it's more than my ticker, so i f'd up last week and ate WAY too many calories everyday, i know i overate and i know that it all began with one extra meal. then it snowballed into an entire week. i am doing the rite thing now, and that's what matters-getting back on that horse and not getting off. it's just one week out of many! so i will try to focus my energy into increasing my work outs and decreasing my intake to makeup for the weight gained this last week and hopefully get back on track. i have a specific meal plan in mind and i am going to slowly raise my excersize level. hopefully this will work...oh ya will also try to drink that water!

fsaiidni, seems like you have a bit of the same problem as me over eating and you are right once u over eat you always want more and once u stop your self a few days in a row it goes away untill u make the same mistake again...keep it up, everyone has a bad day once in a while, trust me it always happens to me so some reason!

hi there... first time at your diary.

Don't think you've got to "make up" for lost time, go at a safe pace. You fell off the wagon, but the important thing is your getting back on.

Mmhmm mmhmm... what Mike said.
We're all going to have those times where we just dont do so well food & exercise-wise.
But we just need to remember to pick ourselves up and get back to it :)
Overeating is a bitch to overcome but we're all going to get through this!

You can do it! WOOOO! :D

Welcome to your new diary! Good for you for making this decision!!
Re: water....
They say that you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. So the 8 glasses may not be enough. For me that was almost 100 ounces which is essentially 3 litres!!
I have had a really hard time drinking enough water but I do find that when I do, the weight comes off that much easier.
Good luck to you!
P

Good luck with your weight loss!!
And do drink the water...you feel so much better, more energy, skin looks better... I also over eat...and you are so right, one time leads to more times in a row.... dust yourself off and continue with your lifestyle change!

thanks so much for the advice! well, since yesterday i have been trying to increase my water intake, i got in four glasses last night and today i am already on 3. my current goal is 8 per day, but it'll take some getting use to. I never EVER have liked just drinking water, at the dinner table my glass would always remain half empty. but, i will do anything to help me lose weight and if that means i'll be making bathroom visits every hour-i'm down for that. i just hope to god this week will make a dent in my weight goals-i went to the frikin doctors office yesterday, and they weighed me in at 167!, here is my rationalization (please let me know if i'm wrong) :
1) i had about 2 glasses of water an hour before i got on the scale
2) It was the first day of my period
3) i had stuffed my face for an entire week with salty/greasy food
4) i was wearing shoes/jacket ect...

-my hope is that at the end of this week i will have gotten back on track somewhere in the low 160's preferrably at 161...but we'll see how my body reacts...
