Weight-Loss End of Cold Cuts.

Weight-Loss

After recently getting a job in the deli department at my local super market, I've began to hate cold cuts, ALOT for many reasons, but overall I wanted something different.

Ever since I started losing weight my staple has usually been a sandwich with cold cuts (which slowly turned into a wrap with cold cuts lol)
They DO have alot of salt in them, and the taste isn't as good as it used to be, my taste buds have changed...

So usually (like now) I'm hungry, and at a loss at what to prepare. Can anyone suggest something (obviously) healthy, and good? I'll try anything that isn't a salad >.< (still trying to learn how to eat those.. lol)

I will make a big batch of chicken breasts - grilled or roasted once a week then store them in ziplock bags in the fridge

youc an do the same thing with turkey breast or pork tenderloin

peanut butter/cinnamon ad a banana on a whole wheat tortilla - all wrapped up and sliced like sushi is also good.. and filling...

+1 on the grilled meats. I've been known to slice a lamb sirloin thin and use it for sandwiches or wraps, I've used chicken too. Grilled lamb, a few falafel and some tomato and cucumber make a nice wrap, I drizzle mine with tzatziki sauce and whatever hot sauce is handy.

However most of the time I use my grilled meats as a salad topper, every day I eat a big ass salad for lunch. I know you aren't fond of salads but the sky is the limit for ingredients with a salad, anything you can toss in a bowl can be a salad, it doesn't have to be limited to lettuce and fresh veggies.

Today was "southern salad" day for me.

4.5 cups Fresh Express American Blend lettuce
1/4 cup diced potatoes
1/4 cup Glory Foods low sodium southern style (spiced) green beans
2 tbsp black eyed peas
50 grams sliced mushrooms
large onion slice, halved and separated
1 tbsp bleu cheese
1 tbsp real bacon bits
1 chopped jalapeno
topped with 5 oz grilled "blackened" chicken breast, cubed
dash of pepper
3 tbsp FF Hidden Valley Ranch mixed with 3 tbsp of my own cajun "salsa" (tomatoes, okra, onion, dash of vinegar, oil and water blended with a mix of creole spices that I spin in the mini processor)

I grill my meats on Sun and use throughout the week. All my veggies are in the fridge in containers so I can toss a nice salad together in about 5 minutes start to finish. Everyone in my office admires my big tasty salads.

Like Reissue said, a salad doesn't have to be lettuce and vegetables. In fact, a salad doesn't have to contain lettuce at all. One of my favourite salads is a warm crab and new potato salad that has avacados, red onions and a mustard dressing and is really filling, with no lettuce in sight.

Or how about taking a soup in a thermos for lunch with some bread rolls? Soup isn't hard to make yourself if you have a blender.

That sounds pretty tasty.

I've made a salad with new potatoes, chicken breast, artichoke hearts (packed in water), garlic, romano cheese, red onion and olive oil that was damn tasty. Good thing about salads like this is its a one container lunch. Salads were my savior when I started living healthy, my faves are chicken and blueberry salad and curry chicken salad with nuts and grapes. Same deal, make a bunch of it on Sun and eat it all week. I usually made two so I didn't burn out.

thanks for the replays guys, I've been at my job, pretty busy over the holiday week, (well somewhat..oddly enough mon-fri were hard sat and sunday were dead ha.!)

I'm going to do some personal shopping wends, gonna get all fresh stuff :)

One of my favorite sandwich is a tomato with basil, a little salt and pepper and some balsamic vinegar. I've been making it as a wrap since I found these flax seed wraps that are great.

Another is an egg white salad sandwich. I use low fat mayo and add tabasco sauce. Really good.

You have the best ideas for foods and cooking. Are you a chef or a really knowledgeable foodie?

What's wrong with tinned fish? Salmon for the good oils, or tuna with the flavours already added (tomato and basil or thai-style spicy), with baby spinach leaves. If you don't like soggy sandwiches you can get those tiny wee cans and make it on the spot, or decant a larger can into a tupperware or jar.

Fish is good for you!

Ya, I finally got bored of cold cuts too and replaced them with canned tuna. Chunk white albacore something something in water- I eat (7) 6.5oz cans a week now either in a wrap or just on wheat bread. I thought it would be gross at first, but some sugar-free pickles, honey mustard, and horseradish makes it quite tasty. You get a helluva lot more protein from tuna anywho.

I've read a lot recently that due to the high mercury content in canned tuna -that you should really limit your intake to 3 -4 cans a week ...

That means I would have to go without lunch 3 or 4 days a week!

Yes, limiting your tuna is a good thing, and variety is the spice of life. It's been found that people who change up their foods tend to be slimmer with the same caloric intake.

Mercury isn't good, but there are worse things for you. Don't sweat it too much unless you are pregnant or think you might become pregnant. Marcus? Is there something you want to tell us?

There's more mercury in white (albacore) tuna than in light, and more still in sushi tuna.

has the USDA's take on it. is Consumer Reports by way of NPR.

Because mercury is stored in body fat, I would be very cautious about eating large quantities of tuna while putting on fat, because when you lose that fat, a bunch of mercury gets dumped back into your bloodstream.

I'm just going to come right out and admit I didn't read those tuna = death by mercury articles. But I always heard that the most mercury is found in shark, on account of how it's on the top of the food chain and so has not only the mercury it's absorbed, but also the stuff that was in the little critters it's been eating all its life. Shark is the fish in fish and chips, and in processed fish cakes. It's also called lemon fish. Given that I avoid shark, I think tuna's pretty okay now and then.

But you know what's really nice? Smoked salmon. Now that's a fish.
