Your mostly right, it does hurt you, in two different ways.

1. Increases your metabolism making it more difficult to fall asleep.

2. Once you do fall asleep, your metabolism sharply decreases and the calories in your stomach don't get burned like they should.

ACTUALLY, you do have a metabolic rate when you go to sleep, so you will burn calories. All im going to tell you is don't eat carbs right before bed but it is highly recommended that you have a slow-burning protein before you sleep.
Check out this link, You'll find it really helpful

Of course this is givin that you lift weight throughout the day.

Yes you do have a metabolic rate, but it SHARPLY decreases. Your burning of calories is greatly reduced. Notice they convienently push one of their supplements after they tell you about the protein before bed. It can be beneficial to eat casein (sp?) protein before you sleep. Milk or Cottage cheese is perfect for this.

I can't sleep if I'm the least bit hungry, so I usually have some plain grilled chicken before bed (I'd have the cottage cheese, but I can't have dairy). Anyways, eating before bed is fine so long as it's the right stuff.
