Eating right, excercising, no weight or inch loss!

I moved to a small town about eight months ago and decided it was time to get my life back on track and my body back in shape. I am 5'6 and, at the time, weighed about 210 pounds, wore a size 16-18. I started dieting when I moved here, just working on eating healthy, properly proportioned meals. I was straight out of college and had previously been living off fast food, so the weight loss was almost instantaneous. I dropped 20 pounds in my first month, 10 in my second, then started gaining it all back.

So, about two months ago, I decided to add exercise to my plan. In high school, I ran 6-8 miles a day and am working to build back up to that. In my first month of running a half mile a day, I lost about 5 pounds but dropped down to a size 14. Since then, I have been running a mile a day, changing up between running and walking and taking different routes with different hills and such, but am now back up to a size 16.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I just don't understand why I'm not losing (and even gaining) when I've been eating right and exercising. Is this a sign that I need to go see a doctor and make sure everything is okay? Or do I just need to wait it out and eventually will start losing?

Adding in strength training or other types of workouts isn't really an option, there's not any kind of gym in my small town.

Thanks for any advice you may have!

I am overweight for the first time (5'4" and 185 lbs)...And I have been working out for 5 weeks now! I think I could still do better on the eating part, but I thought because I am working out 7 times per week that my body would at least react a little. I haven't lost any weight OR inches at all yet! It is so so so frustrating. I am concerned that this whole weight gain (and my problems with losing it) are possibly tied to birth control pills? The time when I started gaining and when I went on the pill are pretty close. But people don't gain 60lbs from the pill...... maybe 10.... I am just frustrated that I am working so hard and not seeing results.

It depends - do you know exactly what you're eating.

One thing that's true is that your body adapts to exercise. What burned 200 calories when you started might burn far less once you adapt to it.

Try something like if you want to keep track of exactly how many calories you're getting a day. That will give you a better idea of what's going on and you can decide from that if you need to be patient and/or cut more calories, or if you need to talk to a doctor.
