dumbell more effective?

Just wondering is doing curles, bench presses and raising it over your head more effective at working the arm muscles than push-ups?

I bought a starter set and i can defiently feel the burn alot more with the barbell than doing push-ups.

You're probably going to put on more muscle with the barbell. I'm not sure about the physiology of this, but I do know that my a friend of mine does about 500 situps and 200 pushups a day, and it's doing jack diddley for him.

Physiologically speaking the bench press is a mass builder. The average person needs to lift betwen 4 and 8 reps to add lean muscle mass. This varies by person though. An in shape person should be able to go to 20+ pushups before failure. This rep count begins to train the muscle fibers for endurance, but not power. If you want to get bigger, eat a lot and do lower reps. This is general advice, some people grow with reps of 10 - 12, play with it. When your muslces feel like they're swelling up, you're doing it right.

Thanks alot for the information. I was doing about 25 puchups a day and never making it past 25. It really seemed useless. So far i can already feel the difference with the barbell.
