does running keep me from getting bigger?

I'm 16 and i usually run every other day for 4 miles and i lift opposite of the days i run..... i eat around 3500 to 4000 calories and 150 grams of protein a day, so i eat big to get big..... but i wondered if me running keeps me from getting bigger... i've been wanting to gain about 30 to 40 pounds.... i'm 140 about and i want to get to 170-180. what should i do?

Well, you're 16...so I wouldn't worry too much. running that much will burn more calories, and having a caloric surplus is what will keep you in an anabolic (muscle building) state.

Pro bodybuilders will do very little cardio during their bulking phases. To truely bulk up, you'd probably need to cut down on the running. Otherwise your muscle gains will be much slower. maybe cut back to 2 days of running for a month, and see how much weight you gain. You sound pretty athletic, and are only 16 so yer still growing, so cutting back on running shouldn't cause you to gain much fat.

Make sure you're getting complex carbs, fiber, and plenty of healthy fats. Diets too low in fat will stunt your own testosterone production which will stunt your gains.

i ran track in high school and started lifting weights at the beginning of my senior year. i was running about 40 miles a week on most of the year, 50 or so in the off season. i never really made any size gains that year until i graduated and stopped running so much. i continued to lift weights with the same frequency, but only ran 2-3 times a week, 3-4 miles at a time. i gained 17 pounds that summer, and then 17 more by christmas. sure, some of that is going to be fat when you gain 34 pounds in 6 months, but a significant portion was muscle.

my experience is that running does restrict mass gain. you dont have to stop altogether to gain mass, but as was said, you need excess calories to gain mass.

What i would recommend for you is walkin on an treadmill, on a full incline, not very fast, like a 2.5 speed, it will burn a lot of fat. I do it during cuttin phase and it works like a charm and i can keep about 95% of my muscle mass.
