does pilates help?

I am extremely inflexible. I was wondering if pilates really does increase flexibility? For example, will it increase flexibility in my ankles, I am not even able to sit on my knees because my ankles will not allow it.

hmmm i think it wouldn't help in your situation. i think you need to be flexible first, then do pilates.

I’m also madly inflexible………I was told that if I wanted to work up to doing yoga, that I should do serious stretching programs first..and then in a few months think about yoga……..so I bought the firm’s 15 minute stretch tape….it’s actually about 10 years old and I’ve never ever used it! Just this year I purchase myself some yoga tapes (beginner of the beginner) and am doing them anyway. But strtch and flexibility is important!

I would have to say without a doubt.... given the fact your seemingly inflexible at the moment that Pilates would help you to become more flexible!!! Make sure you get a good teacher though, I have heard many conflicting reports on Pilates....teachers not the actual exercise program itself.

LiveFrom NY- has the yoga helped, should I try that?
Shem-I have not been able to find any pilates instructors in my area, probably couldn't afford them anyway, but I have bought "Winsor Pilates", do you know anything about these?

shaunda91,
Winsor Pilates is very good. Also, you can definitely build your flexibility simply by stretching. Even if you cannot stretch very much, just do what you can, and even if you don't stretch very much at all, as long as you feel the stretch, it is helping. Just keep doing it and you will eventually become more flexible.

I do yoga often and there are many people in my classes that are not very flexible at all and they still participate and get the same satisfaction out of the class. If you are not very flexible there are variations to stretches you can do that are not as hard and you just keep doing it and work your way up to being flexible! Hope some of this helps!

erin- Thanks, that does help. I have started doing the 20 minute winsor workout, I can feel it working my abs-boy can I feel it- but I can't tell if it's helping my inflexibility, so I bought Karen Voights Pure and Simple stretch to do also. I've done it twice so far and I was getting discouraged already because I am unable to perform the stretches, even the modified versions very well. But I will keep at it, so thanks again.

dont let the teacher force you - if they come and manually (physically) 'assist' your stretches or try to force your flexibility they are a bad teacher.
