Does it count as "benching"

if you dont have a weight bench and are just laying on your back on the floor>? I dont have a bench at home and im sort of tight when it comes to money. I have 65 pounds in weights at home with a bar, but im thinking of spending a few bucks to add some weights. but doing this on the floor, is it still working the same or is it uneffective or dangerous?

Both

I would have to say both. You want your bar to come come to your chest so you can get a good stretch and better extention on your arms. Remember, bench is about the chest.. also, when you complete a rep, tighten your chest muscles at the top.

If you really want to start working out and on a very tight budget. Get you a flat dumbbell bench (usually you can find them pretty cheap at 'Play it again sports' stores, and get you 20's and 25's and 30's in dumbells. You can actually put together a really nice workout with that hitting every muscle group. As you get more money, add 35's.. etc.

BTW: Shouldn't you be out running or walking? Only 3.5 weeks left. :D

:D I wish, Im at work (8-5) ill be doing some HIIT for a half hour tonight though, along with hopefully another hour of just some curling and my version of benching LOL. Then im taking tomorrow off from weight training and doing just another half hour of HIIT after work.

question, its only my second day of training so I had a 2 protein shakes yesterday, had one this morning and ill have another tonight after everything. But now tomorrow when im not doing any weight training should i still have a protein shake? if so when?

Just me..

By laying on the floor doing benches, I am going to go out on a limb here and say you are probably working more your triceps then your chest..

I am going to make a suggestion, please someone jump in as well....

I am assuming you have the one inch bar barbell with this.

Start off by doing

4 sets of Pushups, find your max (meaning go untill you can't go up any more). Wait for 30sec, do your max - 1, then wait 30 sec.. do your max -2..etc. Make sure back and legs straight, and only touch nose to floor and back up.

Instead of doing your floor bench press. Do what you did, but move you hands together about 1.5 fists apart from eachother. Bring the bar down to your midsection bending your elbows outwards and back up. This will work your triceps instead of your chest. OR, better yet, lay on a bed with your head hanging over the end and do Skull Crushers with the bar.

Then do your curls.

As far as your protein goes..

Forgot about your protein question..

Seriously, like I said before. I don't think you need more than one shake per day. And, even with that workout, I would probably find an alternative solid protein for your offdays, like chicken, tuna or a good meaty turkey sandwhich, but.. it's not going to hurt you having one on your offday, just have that one in the morning, whereas I would do one 1 hour before your workout on those days.

Your protein shakes should be included in your total caloric intake for the day. You want to keep that amount even on your off days. You can bench on the floor, but its a bit better with dumbells. But like was already said, a bench by itself is inexpensive.

alright thanks guys im taking in all this advice

another question... I love the idea of the pushups, doing my max and then -1 after each time.

For curls, whats a good amount of curls (all i have is 20lbs) for me to do (sets, and reps) some of you seem to know my status if not im about 5'8 153 lbs, brand new to lifting.

Im going to do both of those tonight along with 30 minutes of HIIT, and as many crunches as I can do throughout the night. Plus i might do a few reps of my version of bench pressing.

If you have a bar and weights, and dumbells, you should be doing A LOT more then benching and curling, you need to be working your whole body. I understand that youre a beginner, and almost everybody that starts just wants to bench and do curls and work the muscles people can see easily, but you can do a lot more with that equipment
