distance running and medince ball/plyometric training

I'm a long distance runner (5k>marathon) who periodizes strength work thoughout my season: base strength during recovery; plyometric/medicine ball/muscle endurance build-up during pre-season and early season; plyo/med ball/musc endurance maintanence during mid and late season.

However, I'm still somewhat new to the game and a bit hazy on the science: how does using explosive movement with med balls differ from doing traditional core exercises? What does a long distance runner gain from using med balls exercises? Does the strength program make sense considering my goals are running performance oriented?

Thanks, in advance.
