Di's Daily Diary of Maintaining

Hi all,
I have lost the weight I needed to lose, and now fighting that daily battle of maintaining my loss. I started out at 156 pounds (I am only 5'2") and now weigh around 120. I would like to keep my weight in the 118-122 range, which I have been able to do for the most part. But lately, I feel I am struggling a little more. My exercise is going great, but I am struggling with my eating. I have become more lax in counting calories and I have been eating more fast food and stuff that I know is not good for me. I want to get this under control before any real damage is done.

Anyway, I thought that since so many of you have your daily journals, that I would also try this method to help me maintain. It will not only make me feel more accountable, but I am hoping I can get a little support along the weigh. Yes, even though the real loss is done...the battle never really goes away!

Currently, I have been weighing in on Sunday and Thursday AM's, so on those days I will be posting my results. Other days I will just be writing my thoughts, feelings, and struggles about this daily lifestyle. I invite one and all to visit frequently, and feel free to pop in and leave comments...good or bad!

Just finished breakfast of cereal and low-fat milk. I will soon be going outside for a 3 mile walk, since it is a beautiful cool morning for a change!

My husband is wanting to take me out for dinner tonite as a belated birthday celebration. I am trying to think of a restaurant that I can choose where I will not be so tempted by high fat and calories. Does such a place even exist!!??? He just doesn't get it...he can eat and eat all he wants and never gains an ounce. He thinks that because I have lost the weight that I should be able to just start eating the way I used to! How does he think I got to be 156 pounds!!!??? I try telling him it is a lifestyle change for me, but I don't think he quite understands.

Well, will be back tomorrow AM after my Sun. weigh-in...hope it is not too bad after celebrating tonite!!

Morning weigh-in today: 120.6
This stayed the same since Thursday. I know I should be happy about that, but there is that part of me that wants to see that scale move down a little. I am happier at around 118-119. I know, they are just numbers and it is silly of me to even think this...but I find myself giving that scale number way too much power and importance! I tell others not to do this, yet I am a hypocrit! Anyone else feel this way????

Well, time to go for a nice long walk...still having those cool mornings, so I have been getting outside instead of the basement treadmill. It helps my mental health!

If anyone is bothering to read this...THANKS!:waving:

I ended up going out for pizza with the family last night... a local place has a good deal on Sunday nights. A family special where you get a 16" pizza, salads and drinks for 6 people for $16.99. Their food is awesome as well! Well, I do try to fill up on salad and eat less pizza that way!
Last night my oldest daughter insisted on ordering a skillet cookie for dessert to share in honor of my birthday! If you don't know what that is...it is a hot chocolate chip cookie (large), topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and choc. sauce! Yum...haven't splurged like this for months!!! And both our hubby's shared it with us as well, so I really did not eat that much. But, it was worth it...and the only real treat I have had to celebrate this year, so I refuse to feel guilty!

I am, however, going to work out hard this AM. Will be hitting the treadmill, where I can get a more intensive, calorie burning work-out than when I take a walk outside. Gonna go strap on my ipod and jam with my work-out!!!!!

Today has been stressful...to say the least! We live on a farm and are having a new garage/workshop constructed. Today was the first day of construction. The crew arrives bright and early and proceeds to dig and hit our power line that was buried under ground. So, at 7 AM I awakened to no electricity or water (since we have a well which runs with an electric pump!).

Finally, about an hour ago, it was restored...they had to dig a whole new trench...our yard is a mess and the construction is going slow. Needless to say, with no water or power, I did not work out this AM...I knew I could not jump in the shower to clean up. I may try to get out and take a walk this evening, unless something else goes wrong!
I also have not been getting my usual water intake...did not want to drink too much when I can't flush the toilet!!!

Tomorrow can only be better, right???!!!

Thanks for stopping in! Actually, it is 35 pounds, but who's counting, LOL!!!??

Well, it all started in early Feb. of this year. I work in an elementary school, and some of the other teachers wanted to start a Biggest Loser Challenge. All participants would put $10 into the pot and at the end of the contest there would be cash prizes for the top 3 losers(Winners!). I knew I NEEDED to participate, but had convinced myself that at my age (49), and pre-menopausal status, etc...that I could not drop any weight. In fact, my doctor even told me that at my age, I was doing well just maintaining my weight!! But, at 5'2" and 156 pounds, I knew I should at least try.
Basically I started by cutting out all junk food and decreasing soda...but not totally eliminating it. I also started short walks on my treadmill gradually...trying to get back in shape. That first week I lost 3 pounds...I was thrilled! This motivated me to keep going. I started keeping better track of how many calories I was eating...not totally strict like some who weigh and measure, but just tried to get a good estimate. Every week I lost something...maybe only half a pound or a pound, but every week I lost. This kept me going, as well as my clothes getting looser and looser. Long story short...I ended up winning first place in the contest, which was only $75, but I was thrilled...and have lost 10 more pounds since the contest was over in early May. So, all in all, it took me about 4 months to lose the 35 pounds.

And, yes, I am finding maintaining to be hard work! Especially since it is summer and I am not working. Being home is hard on me. When I am at school working, I don't really think that much about eating, but at home I get bored and think I need to start munching on something! I try to keep lots of fruits and veggies around, but they don't always satisfy that craving!
Well, I probably told you way more than you ever wanted to know! Thanks again for stopping by, and best of luck on your weight loss. How much would you like to lose? How much have you lost already?

Finished a treadmill work-out this AM. Feels so good to start the day this way!
A good friend and myself are meeting this afternoon to catch up. Her husband had surgery for a ruptured colon recently and he almost died. So, we are getting together to catch up and de-stress a little. Her schedule is very busy with hubby being so sick, so she suggested a "dessert date" at Steak n Shake. Well, I could not say no...I really want to see her. But, she is one of these naturally thin people who eat anything and everything they want and they never gain an ounce! So, I will try to save back some lunch calories so I can indulge a little this afternoon.:piggy:

Thursday weigh-in:118.4

I actually went down 2 pounds...a little surprising, considering my electricity problems and the dessert date! I had a very yummy strawberry shake and enjoyed every drink of it, I must say!!
But I must also say that I have been eating lots of fresh vegetables (I love summer!), and trying to eat fruit whenever I crave something sweet. So, that must have balanced it out.

I have a busy day running errands today, so not sure if I will work out or not. I might take today as my day off...or maybe will try to get a good walk in with my labrador this evening!

I had some very successful bargain shopping yesterday! First of all, my daughter works at a clothing store where she gets 40% off, which, because she lives at home with me, I also get! So, I went by to see her and ended up buying two pairs of dressy capris that will come in handy when I start back at school in 3 weeks. I also bought a dress on clearance for over half off. Ended up paying only $20 for it!
But here comes the best part...I went by our local Goodwill, and ended up getting 5 pairs of name-brand capris/slacks for a grand total of $20! What a great idea...sorry it took me so long to think of it!
For those of you that are in the process of losing, places like the Goodwill are a great place to get those "in-between" sizes that you require as you get down to your goal. Like I said, wish I had thought of this sooner...now I have some brand new clothes that are now too big for me! At least EVERYTHING I buy is on sale...no exceptions! I will not pay full price!
I plan to go back in a month or so to try to find more bargains!! Well, that is my weight loss tip of the day...
Now, time for a good ole treadmill workout of about 4 miles!

Way to go on the weight loss! I am currently in the losing phase, but I have lost before and trying to maintain that is the hardest! Thing is, we all live in the real world and there are going to be celebrations and ice cream nights. I think you are doing pretty darn good!

The Goodwill is a great place for the inbetween sizes. I also take all my clothes I no longer use there. The bonus of that is, if you file long form on taxes, they give you a paper for a really good write off. It is a win-win situation.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

Thanks so much for stopping in and for the kind words! I did the same thing with my clothes that are now to big. Well, first my daughter and I had a combined garage sale, and then what did not sell, we took to the Goodwill. I had many things that were practically brand new and I hated to give them away on the one hand. BUT, on the other hand, I am thrilled to no longer fit in them, and I did NOT want the temptation of having them around "just in case". Now that I have started replinishing my wardrobe I am very determined to keep fitting into these new and cute things!

Good luck with your weight loss...how much have you lost so far, and how much further do you need to go?

I am up WAY too early this morning...getting ready to go to a 5K in which my son, who is a runner, will particpate. It is called Mud Mountain, and it's a very challenging course, full of hills and nature. Hopefully not muddy today, since I don't think it has rained down there recently. I hope he makes a good showing. It is a college cross country course, so there are always tons of great runners competing. My son is still in high school, so he just uses these summer 5K's as a training tool for the fall cc season. Go Jordan!!!

Since I usually work-out in the AM's...I will probably not get one in today. However, I plan to do lots of walking before, during, and after he runs. I am gonna wear my pedometer to see how well I do.

Have a great day, everyone!!!

Had a very long day yesterday! My son did very well in his challenging 5K, completing the course in 20:32, his personal best on this particular course! I am very proud of him! We spent to rest of the day shopping and driving around various areas and ended up in St. Louis. Finally made it back home after dark...whew, I was tired! My pedometer, by the end of the night, had me going over 15,000 steps and a total of 7 miles! Not sure if it is totally accurate, but still, I did some moving!!!!

Sunday weigh-in: 118.2 WOO-HOO! Still hanging right on the low end of my target zone! I am thrilled!

Gonna go outdoors for a nice walk...have a great Sunday, everyone!!!

Had an appt. with my orthopedist this AM, to recheck my knee problem. It is feeling better after physical therapy and being off work this summer. The real test will come once school starts again. I am to go back in 6 more weeks, if I am having any problems. I do wear a knee brace when walking or working out, and that keeps me pretty pain free during exercise.

Did not get my work out in this AM, since I had to be at the doctor's early, so I need to work that in somewhere later today. It is getting pretty warm out, so not sure where or when I will walk!

Have a great day, everyone!!!

I ended up taking a walk outside late yesterday afternoon...got very hot and was dripping in sweat by the time I got home! Ate a light supper and then took a nice shower. Felt much better then!

Today I did a treadmill workout early and then a little strength training. Of course, then it was back to the shower!

Before all my energy is zapped, I should clean my house. It's funny, but those kind of thankless tasks seem to be on the back burner lately. I have energy to work out, but not scrub bathrooms! Makes perfect sense to me!

Have a wonderful day, everyone...stay the path!!

Hey! Thankyou for being the first to reply to my diary :) I was starting to wonder if anyone was actually around. Great work on the 35lbs! Being around this forum again is showing me that weight loss is actually possible!

I'm not sure what timezone you're in, but hope your evening is going well :D

Janez,
Thanks for stopping in...I appreciate it! I do think that lots of people read the diaries, but everyone is so darn busy, that most do not take the time to reply. I don't expect lots of feedback, BUT it is certainly nice to have someone stop in and reply to my diary every now and then. Makes me feel more accountable and like what I am doing actually matters!
So, I do know how you are feeling!
Good luck again...I will be checking in to see how you are doing!

Di
