Dips and shoulder pain

Hi, this is my first post here...

I recently started lifting weights (always been more of a runner & bicyclist), and have been doing dips as part of my routine.

Yesterday I started to get this sharp pain in my right shoulder while doing dips. Its hard to describe where but it seems to be in the scapula & deltoid area.
My left shoulder is pain-free. Today the right shoulder felt okay, so I tried a few dips and the pain came back again. I'm going to take it easy for a while, but I'm wondering if I should be worried about permanent damage to the shoulder and how I can avoid it in the future.

When I did a lot of weight training a couple of years ago, I got severe shoulder pain when I was on the bench, dumbell presses or even push-ups.

I went to see the physio and the position of my right shoulder was wrong we I was pushing up. I had to lay off the gym for a few months till it healed, then slowly build it back up again.

Have you checked your technique or your positioning when doing dips?

its possible that you might be putting to much strain on your front delt, perhaps try some different movements to hit the target area, rather than dips.

if you're fairly heavy and new to training, you may not have enough muscle development yet for dips.
could be bad form.
could be a little tear or something.

I'd lay off for a few weeks from dips before trying again...see if its still an issue or not.

Ive heard that dips are very bad for your shoulders. I heard a dude who works with shoulder injuries said "Id like to go to everyone at the gym who does dips, give them my card and say "Trust me, you'll need it""
It could just be that you need to find a substitute exersice.
and like others have said, work your rotator cuffs.
