Dilemma

I have a bit of a dilemma, I was just at the gym and a girl who works at my place walked in with a PT and went to the smith machine, he was showing her how to squat and told her not to go down further than a quarter squat (It didn’t even look like it went that far down) as there's no benefit in going further and you can use more weight. He even said that the only people that need to go any deeper are boxers (WTF)

Now I have a rule of never commenting on anything a PT says in there as it’s their job and they’re just trying to make a living but this skinny legged idiot is teaching her a load of **** and I know her. Should I tell her that her PT is crap?

yea, i would lol.
she's paying money for good training, but if the training sucks and could be MUCH better, i say tell her the truth.

I'd definately want to tell her.

But the thing is...I reckon she won't believe you over him due to the only fact that he's a 'PT'. I can't believe how many PT's there are who are sh1t and know f**k all. Pisses me off.

If you know her I would def pull her aside sometime and say "you didn't hear it from me, but....."

Any PT that invites a Smith Machine into the program is not right in my book.

Yeah, but I clean what he squats and it shows, he's one of those guys that lifts in jogging pants to hide the matchsticks he has for legs

I used to be anti-smith machine too but not so much anymore. You live and learn, and I've learnt that just about everything has it's place

Anyway, I can't blame him for using the smith machine as this gym has no squat rack :speechless:

Hmm, I'm starting to wonder if I should now, I've just found out her name and thinking about it. I just don't feel right about questioning the advice of a qualified person who needs clients to earn a living

Confront him then. Tell him you're curious to why he recommended that. If he's a complete **** to you then who cares if you tell her or not?

Yea i'd ask him personally.

But f**k him, if he's giving out bad advice he's basically sh1t at his job. He doesn't deserve to be a PT :)

Good point, that's not a bad idea

I did just tell her that she might want to get a second opinion on them. If she asks me how I think they should be done I forward her to a squat form guide and one of the Dave Tate articles on T-Nation about squatting.

Ah, it seems like it's all cool. I emailed the girl saying she might want to get a second opinion and she said that it was just a trial session (they have them for new members) and she likes to do full squats usually so sounds like she knows what she's doing

You might just pull him aside and ask him something along the lines of "I heard you recommending not to do full squats. Can you tell me why?" Then you might be able to throw in your two cents.

Hahaha, i guess im the d**k out of everytime then eh? Id just go over to her by herself and ask her to ask him "why this way?"

I do that all the time especially in the gym. You ask someone why this way and they go..."uh....because the other way is really hard!" :tiny violin:

In that case you have no way of telling/demonstrating the proper way to squat to the girl without a squat rack. I personally would not consider joining a gym without a squat rack even if they give you a doughnut or a manicure. I would rather join a spit and sawdust type of gym with enough equipment/squat racks than these fancy smancy places without equipment but with a "name". If the smith machine is what she has been shown on then its pretty tough for her and i feel for her. At least she tried to squat.

I remember when i was learning how to squat there was a temptation to put a block of wood under my heels as others did. I also thought of doing smith machine squats but stuck to my guns and just did front squats/normal squats without any assistance.

Neither would I, but it a chain of gyms and there's one about 300 yards away that does have a squat rack. I do lower body in the one with a squat rack and upper in the larger gym that just has a smith machine.

I'm quitting the gym for good at the end of the month anyway, I'm switching to my sand bag and kegs set up full time
