Diary of a Fat Diabetic

I joined this site to help me find information and to keep me motivated in keeping my blood sugar and weight under control. Today February 11th 2010 is my first day of trying to live life instead of just sitting on the sideline watching time pass me by.

My current stats are

Age 31
Height 5 feet 8 inches
Weight 360lbs
Sugar Level 232
A1C 8.5

Meds as of 2-11-2010
Metformin 1000mg 2 times a day
Glyburide 5 mg 2 times a day

I wonder where I will be in 3 months for my next doctor visit in 3 months. I'm excited about meeting with a nutritionist tomorrow to set up my meal plans. I plan to record my progress so that I can stay motivated and also keep track of what I'm doing so that if I go off plan I can kinda see what it was that derailed me and keep it from happening again.

I was able to do an hour on our old recumbent bike at 10 mph (I know not very good) I dug out of storage. I figure I can use this sometimes when I sit down and watch TV.

Checked my blood sugar today and was happy to see it in the normal range :)... Been trying to get exercises in and now that I got set up with a low carb meal plan I think I can do this. By the way I came across a channel on cable called fit TV and it's been very helpful and motivational.

An hour exercising is better than no hour exercising 2fat! No matter how slowly you pedal you are still doing way more than if you were reclining on the sofa watching TV.
If I had a recumbent bike... well I would probably be too lazy, but I like to imagine that I would try to watch the programs I like on it, make myself "earn" the TV.

And for you being a diabetic it is so important to find a way to lose some weight and live more healthy. We will all be here with you and encourage you because you need it so much. We want you healthy and happy!
Have a great weekend, Camy

Been eating exactly as I was told by the nutritionist and exercising everyday so far. I've notice a lot of my leg swelling has gone done and I feel better overall. I've been having some really bad cravings but so far I have been able to ignore them.

I am right there with you 2fat. I am a fatass myself (260 at the moment) but I started the year at 280 and now I also have a Nutritionist that has laid out a meal plan and is giving me all kinds of info (here's a quick tip for you, be sure to eat low fat cheese with any fruit you eat because it turns all that extra sugar from the fruit into energy instead of storing it as fat;). Stay doing what he/she says and remember that this is not a stupid 30 day weight lose diet scheme, this is YOU LIFE (and mine) so don't BS around.

Btw, I have sleep apnea from being so over weight and have to sleep with a BIPAP machine ever night (hoping that stops when I reach my goal weight of 210 lb's). Keep on trucking 2Fat:).

Thanks for the support Barry. I had a sleep apnea test but thankfully I don't have it and hope I never do.

I got myself a pedometer today and think it's going to help me keep my but moving because it makes me take an actual look at how much I'm moving each day. With somethings (mainly numbers) in life I can be a little OCD'ish so I know that I won't let myself go to bed at night without hitting my daily goal.

Still eating right and for the most part all the cravings are gone. The best part is I actually can get out of bed in the morning feeling refreshed instead of struggling to get up and get out of bed at the last possible minute.

Put my pedometer on about noon yesterday and only took it off when I was on the exercise bike. Did 10,847 steps. I did get worried I'd only have like 2000 steps so I went for a couple of walks that evening.

Been chugging along eating right getting more exercise and getting up and moving more often. Haven't had a chance to weigh myself but even if the weight loss is minimal I'm feeling a lot better.

Went out and got myself a good fitting pair off shoes so that I can walk more without the foot pain. While I was there I was checking out the treadmills and I'm thinking of picking one up because for some reason I always seem to have better weight loss results when I make sure I walk alot as opposed to any other thing.

Good luck, 2fat! I'm finally starting my journey, too. I have more side issues, so I'm going the weight loss surgery route. If I want to see my kids get married, I've got to do something major!!!

Just focus on every hour. Every choice. Each choice is a fresh start. Make it a good one!!

good luck! glad you got a new pair of good shoes.. i never realized how much of a difference they make when walking until i splurged on some proper ones.. they help a lot with the whole body ache-wise!

I am a diabetic also. I too am on metformin. My last A1C was 6 just a week ago. I've come a long way and lost 20 lbs. It is so hard for us diabetics to lose because of the insulin problems. If you have questions at all for a fellow diabetic, please ask!!

Thanks guys for the feedback. I just got back from a walk in my new shoes and wow it's a big difference. I guess my doctor was right about me needing to get a proper fitting shoe to "lessen" my back pain when I walk. These shoes may have been a bit more than I normally pay but the pain I usually feel when I walk didn't set in at all.

If anybody has any recommendations of things to do to lower my A1C I'd love to hear it. By the way I've been testing my blood sugar daily and haven't had a spike yet in fact my daily levels with the pills have been in the normal non diabetic range. So blood sugar wise I think I'm doing great.

I'm actually waiting for the fed-ex guy today to deliver this workout video I ordered off an infomertial called Zumba... it looks like fun and should be here today yay..

You probably know this already but it won't hurt to repeat it. If you are controlling your blood sugar daily, you should have no worries about the A1C test. Ways to control your blood glucose:
Limit carbohydrates and especially cut way back on refined carbohydrates like sugar, white bread, candy, and pastries. Eat whole grains and foods with lots of fiber, especially soluble fiber.
Get lots of cardio exercise. Keep improving your cardiovascular fitness as much as possible. This will help control blood glucose and also your cholesterol. Diabetics have to maintain cholesterol in tighter limits than non-diabetics. Lose weight.

Bought myself EA active for my wii and started using that on top of everything else. I mean it gets me moving and the boxing and running makes me sweat and breath harder so I know it's better than just sitting watching TV. Still haven't checked my weight but I can now fit into clothes I haven't worn in like 6 months so I know I've dropped some inches at the very least. Plus my blood sugar is staying in the 80-100 range as opposed to the 200+ it was at when I first started this journey.

I finally set a goal that I think is doable. Get down to 300lbs by 8-1-2010. That's 45 pounds in a little over 5 months. I have a lot of walking coming up as we head to San Diego in 3 weeks. We're going to the zoo, wild animal park, sea world and the beach at the very least. So I know from experience I'm walking at least 30 miles or more that week. Plus I'm not going to eat out I'm going to hit the grocery store as soon as we get there so that I make sure I eat right still (My wife said the whole family will follow my diet wile were out there.)

I was looking at the reviews for that EA active... Do you like it? Do you like it better than the regular wii fit program?

I never tried the wii fit but my wife has and she said they are totally different. With the active you actually have to do the exercises like when you run you have to actually pick up your feet and move as opposed to just shuffling your weight on a balance board. I especially like the cardio boxing and the squats you feel those the most...

Feeling a bit down today really having trouble staying motivated. It's like I hit a wall mentally in fact this is the point I usually just give up but because of my blood sugar issues I can't stop. Hopefully days get easier soon

Back from my vacation but have been sick the last week. Time to get my exercise up and going again now that I'm feeling better.
