Hi,
I have recently been ill and put on about 6lb within the last 2 - 3 weeks. I am now feeling awful and this is making it hard to feel completely recovered. I need to lose weight quickly but safely and I need incentive. I know you have weight loss races or competitions? which do you recommend?
Thanks
Miggy

First try not to get too stressed out or overly critical of the situation, stress can lead to increased weight and if you "beat yourself up" figuratively speaking, you may feel too depressed or helpless the engage in the activities required to get back on track.

Take a little bit and make a list of the foods and drinks you normally consume throughout the day, as far back as you can remember, and look for things you should be eliminating or swapping out for healthier options. For example, if you are drinking more pop, sugary juices, or energy drinks than you may have realized try switching them out for some ice cold water. If you notice that you are snacking on "junk food" try swapping the junk food out for some fruit like bananas, apples, or grapes. If your meals are very sporatic, spread out over long periods of time (8-10 hours+) or your portions are more than you need try shooting for SMALL portioned meals more frequently (some people suggest upwards of 6 meals a day if the portions are small enough). The reason for the small portions more often is it keeps your metabolism moving throughout the day and gives you more energy to stay active. If you go too long without eating you will go into starvation mode and if you eat a large meal while your body is in that mode it is going to hang on to whatever it can.

Other than that stay as active as you can throughout the day. When you go to the store park farther away so you have to walk more. Take the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator. If your not getting too much at the store use a hand basket rather than a shopping cart. In general avoid the easy way out when it comes to daily activities and these little changes may add up and help. You should also be staying physically active in general with exercise, 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity is a great goal to shoot for.

Thanks Matt, what a lot of good advice! I know I eat too much junk when I am stressed. I do dance up to 4 hours each week for fitness but I have had a migraine and that has affected me quite badly. I am over it now but have put on a good few pounds. I want to lose them fast and I know I must eat healthily again. Why do junk foods seem so appealing when your down!

When your down you want to be comforted, hence the term comfort food. Junk food usually tastes pretty good, that good taste you get eating it is appealing and very pleasing to the palette and the whole process is more of a subconscious process than anything else. The subconscious is powerful, when watching TV or playing around on the computer if there is junk food near a lot of times people will reach for it and start eating without even thinking about it. The longer the snacks are open and in reach the more they will keep eating until they get to a point where they have satisfied the deep down desire for the junk and only then does the conscious mind register that they have spent the last 30 minutes to an hour grazing on usually a very unhealthy food.

The trick then is to keep the unhealthy snacks out of easy reach. Put them in the top drawer of the cabinets or somewhere else that isn't easy to just walk by and grab the junk food from, this way you will have to think about what you are doing while grabbing the snacks and will be in a better position to think it through before you partake.

I am trying to stop buying unhealthy food altogether because I still manage to start snacking even if it's out of reach. My family are all at a healthy weight and can enjoy chips and chocolate without becoming overweight so it's hard to have a snack free house. I tend to put on weight so easily. I must just try to distract myself somehow!
