Depressed when you don't work out?

Joey: Yeah. Well, one day doesn't affect my emotions one way or another, but an extended break from rigorous exercise can make me really crabby. And, while I don't have any studies handy, my trainer once explained to me the connection. I believe she said it was hormonal (and of course she explained more deeply). When you take a break from exercise and take a break from "dieting" you can actually reset hormonal patterns, which can help you continue fat loss without the impediment of a plateau. Anyway, I know how you feel, and there is a scientific explanation for your "depression."

James: It's best to properly punctuate and separate words when you're being an unnecessary dick on a message board. Proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar make posts more effective. Just sayin'.

You misunderstood. An argument in a discussion is a "discourse intended to persuade", not two people shouting at eachother.

Tsk-tsk to that misplaced comma.

That quote wasn't me being an intentional dick. He really had misunderstood what I had written, and I was making sure that he understood that I knew that the discourse had no animosity in it. If you or JMike took offense at anything that I posted in this thread (or any other thread), we can discuss it in private messages if you would like. Having said that, don't take that as an apology. Nothing that I wrote here is inappropriate, rude, or mean-spirited.

With the ease of obtaining another person's ideas (N.B. I didn't say "information") in the world today, made even easier by search engines like Google, it is easy to not only find what seems like pertinent information, but researched and well-discussed ideas. I have absolutely zero knowledge about the Boxer rebellion in China, but thanks to Google I can do thirty seconds of searching, and easily convince anyone that didn't know much about it that I was an expert. This is the essence of what the moderators on this forum have been ranting against recently: People with google-knowledge (and sometimes not even that) of various subjects posing as experts. Having an endless amount of ideas at your fingertips doesn't mean that you necessarily have the understanding and experience to really OWN that material. I could read all I wanted on the internet about building a house, but there is no way that I could construct a house on my first try as well as someone who has been doing it for years.

I have no problem with either you or JMike, and for all I know, you're both the tops. The intent behind my posts was simply to help him not fall into the pitfalls of citing google as a reference, or assuming that something that comes up as an early link in google is either relevant or correct.

P.S. I give everything I post a second read before I submit, but not everything gets caught. Frankly, I really couldn't care less if I catch every errant comma or double hit button, as every one of my posts is legible. However, if you are trying to rebuke a person on the internet for ideas that they have posted, attacking their grammar might not be the best choice, especially if the best thing you can come up with is a comma in the wrong place. Normally when you attack a person's grammar, you are trying to imply that they are either stupid or lazy.

No, I was just making a point. I really feel like people take posts without error more seriously. I'm not going to bother PMing you because, well, I don't really do that.

That dude was just trying to be helpful, that's all. And I fully understand your point. As I've said before, the internet is a mansion of myriad rooms, many of which are full of shit. I just think it's unnecessary to write what you wrote, especially using the tone you did, as it can isolate people.

I guess we need to find a study of how reliable Google is to be sure it's a good source because apparently it's full of shit. :smash:

Well, we all know any asshat with a registered account can change a Wiki entry. And you know half the time you look something up using Google, you will find the first, second, or third entry will be a link to a Wiki article. And regarding fitness and especially weight loss information, there is so much widespread misinformation out there. It's hard to sift through what's true or substantiated and what isn't, especially if you don't know much about the topic you're researching. Prime example: spot reduction. Total bullshit, but there are tons of articles and ads claiming it cane be done.

Studies have been done to prove Wiki is as accurate as Encyclopedia Britannica.

No way. Please tell me this is a joke. Please tell me you posted this to be funny. Please, please, please. Please?

Back on topic...

If I miss a scheduled workout I get grumpy/moody. I never used to be that way, but I've noticed a definite difference in my attitude towards working out and it's effect on my moods. I'm a much more happy person when I workout now.

I'm gonna break this down to show you why I got offended:

The number of google results on a search never had, and never will be a valid argument in a discussion that tries to be based in science and fact.
-- I never said they did, I was merely saying they existed. You seem to imply that I did otherwise.

Just tryin to highlight that, bud.
--Condescending much?

I'm not saying anything about exercise increasing seratonin levels. Helpful posts supporting what you are saying would be published medical studies, and/or critical analysis of those studies.
--Again, irrelevant, your trying to make me out to be some bad guy like I said "ooo look at all these google results it must be true"

Posting google results / blogs / muscle mag links don't really do anything, 'cause I could go to any of those sources, and post links detailing how Hitler didn't die (Godwin'd it), and he is coming back to power at any time now.
--Irrelevant.

It is easy to google and sound smart, but if you want to bring valuable information to the table, dig it up right, and serve it up.
--This is a blatant accusation, accusing me of "trying" to sound smart, and dispensing worthless information in the process.

While your post may be true in most aspects, directing it at me was wrong. You could have started a new thread for this crap instead of trying to make me your scapegoat. If you cant see why me, and many others think your just being an asshole, then thats your fault.

I get that way when I have begun running and I stop for 2-3 days

Not really depressed but angry at myself

I just need to start the running up AGAIN!

I get down too. I get down when I miss my forty minute walk, problem number two is that my forty minute walk is just maintaining me. I am not losing anymore weight, so I need to start jogging and who wants to do that outside in thirty degree weather. Man, I hope it warms up soon. We are supposed to get snow tomorrow, I dont care. I will walk through snow lol
Thats why they have snow gear.

well ttylater

That is why I love 24 hours fitness. I can go whenever. I really don't give myself excuses not to go, not that anyone is giving excuses, I am speaking for myself! I have gone at midnite before if that is the only time I can go. I just have to do it.
