Deadlifts are pissing me off!

Hey all,

I have a question about lower back injury from deadlifts.

About four months ago, I did a really stupid thing. I was training, near the end of my workout and very tired. Despite all this, I decided to beat my 1RM on deadlifts (3 plates). Since I was tired, I cheated a little and strained my lower back. For the next week, I could not train or do any cardio.

A month later, I decided to slowly work my way into doing deadlifts again. I worked my way up from one set a week to three sets a week. No maxing out, though.

Anyhow, I was at the gym this morning and doing a 3x3 set at 255 (not very heavy for me at this stage). On my third set, I got a sharp pain in the left side of my lower back that promptly ended the set. Sufficed to say, I was pissed that it wrecked the rest of my workout. This happens to me every time I do more than two sets of deadlifts.

Has anybody ever had this problem and if you, what did you do?

Thanks very much :)

Depends what the type of pain is, but I would suggest getting a medical opinion. If it's a tear or damage to the tissue, you might not be properly healed. If it's just fatique, try dropping the weight for the last set. See if you can at least complete the movement. If you can't you might be in trouble.

Just an update.

I saw a physiotherapist and he said that my core was the problem (as I suspected). I was given several core strengthening exercises and told to tighten my abs when doing deadlifts (As he put it, "tighten your abs like you have to take a piss.")

So far it is working well and I haven't strained my back again.

Thanks!
