deadlifts and squats, lower back tightness

as the subject implies i feel a lot of tightness in my lower back and then some pain afterward when i do squats and deadlifts i.e. my lower body workout...

when ever i squat a heavier weight my back goes down during it and i feel a lot of tightness during it and it lessens the amount i can do, what i mean is im not pushing my legs to the limit im pushing my back to the limit...im not sure if its tightness in my hamstrings but i cant squat all of the way down without lowering my back for balance, can that be fixed? i know to stare at the ceiling when squatting but either way i cant keep my balance without bending my back and even then 70% of the weight is on my toes...im probably going to hear "go check the stickies" before posting this and i apoligize but i just wanted to know how to fix this problem so i can wake up without a stiff back for once...

Start doing some soft tissue work, AKA SMR (Self Myofascial Release), AKA foam rolling.

Also, do front squats for a while, and incorporate lunges and a fair amount of posterior chain work.

I find that the quads main function in a squat is to push the weight, but it's the posterior chain (lumbar, glutes and hams) that contribute to form.

I think you're best bet is to get "New Rules of Lifting." Alwyn's workouts are leg heavy and the first two fat loss programs have a lot of posterior work in them. They certainly helped correct my squat form.

sweet, thanks alot for those links guys, my squatting form is definitely gunna clean up after reading these.

its my flexibility in my legs that still bothers me, i cant squat down at all without losing my balance and falling backwards (no weights, just from standing), most of the time i NEED a bar with weight on it just to keep balance, im not sure what my problem is there...

falling backwards is also a typical sign of glute weakness or lazy glutes. Tell me, do you have a very big "natrual" curve in you're lower back?
