Deadlift Question

I've been doing standard Deadlifts for a while now. I've had lower back pain in the past, so i want to continually increase my strength in my lower back. The first time i used a platform, i went very light, last time i went heavy and i was sore, not in pain, just lower back soreness.

Would doing the DLs on a 4" platform help focus more work on my lower back? What would be the major benefits from working on the platform?

Thanks

I also have started doing them on a platform. My thinking is that instead of making the load heavier, change the technique so you are really hitting the full range of motion. It's just another way to add stress to your muscles which in turn makes them grow. Did that make sense?
