Dancer needs help!!

Im a 19yr old girl who has been a dancer for 16yrs. Lately we havent been doing much so I havent gotten a good workout in a while. Ive noticed that my thighs and butt have gotten bigger and my thighs have cellulite on the back of them. Ive started walking around the lake near my house and eating more healthy, but I dont know what else to do. Id love for my thighs and butt to be a little bit smaller. Is there anything I can do to make this happen.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome

First of all welcome to the forum. Now, you started to eat healthier, that's a positive. You should drink lots of water also. Now as far as exercise, do you have access to any exercise equipment, dumbbells, free weights ? Let us know and I'm sure we'll have good input for you.

Cardio ?

Well I kinda get the impression that weight training isn't for you. If I'm wrong I apologize. You can increase the intensity of your walks. Start of by walking at a normal pace, then incease your speed somewhat, go back down to a normal pace for a bit, then maybe jog a little. Try various speeds for 20-30 minutes, or longer, if you're in good enough shape. There are also some good videos out there that you can follow along on, on TV, if you choose that. what the names of them are I don't know, that answer would have to come from the other forum members who have done those videos. Hope that helps a little.

Weight Training

I disagree with weight training not being for you. I think weight training is for everybody although the workouts may vary.

I think you should start a cardio program and a weight training program...maybe start out with 2 days of strength training and 2 days of cardio a week. For cardio, start with walking and then add some jogging or ride a bike.

Also, what is your diet like?

If you reduce your overall bodyfat percentage you can reduce your cellulite. The problem with cellulite though is that it's somewhat genetic so there's only so much you can do to get rid of it. I have cellulite but when my bodyfat is really low you can barely see it at all and only WAY at the top of my legs.

I completely disagree with the strength training comment. You SHOULD absolutely be strength training. Show me one professional dancer who does not strength train.

I work with a professional dancer. And you better believe her body is svelt, cut and beautiful because of weights. Cardio is necessary too. But it's the combo of the two that creates a dynamic change in anyone's body.

Walking is great. But you should increase the intensity of it. Try jogging a bit. I am hesitant to say do this or do that because a dancers fitness program depends on her classes. You must be careful not to over train. This will not be a good thing for your body at all.

Basically, work in some strength training exercises and continue cardio. Another major segment to reducing body fat is nutrition. Here are 5 tips to fat loss for you to consider...

1) Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Each meal should be 2-3 hours apart. Each meal should contain one protein and one carb. The first meal should be eaten within an hour after waking.

2) Drink lots of water :)

3) Rest properly. This means taking at least 24-48 hours between strength training the same muscles, and it also means getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Lastly, it means taking 1-2 days off from exercising per week.

4) Cardio. This should be done at different intensity levels and different session lengths. Consider doing a low intensity/long session, a high intensity/short session and a few medium intensity/medium length sessions.

5) Strength Training. Strength train each muscle 1-3 times per week. You should lift a proper weight and perform the proper amount of sets/reps for your strength training method.

All of the above things combined will result in fat loss. Good luck!

Weight train

Apparently my comment to cheeky chick was taken a bit out of context. I was not implying that she should not work out with weights. I just got the impression that it didn't interest her going by her previous post. I personally think strength/weight training is more beneficial than cardio. but that is JMO.
