cramps while running

so what causes cramps? how do i prevent them from happening?
so far it seems like they only come if i drink some whey protein before i run. weird.

Some people recommend cardio on an empty stomach. If you are having cramps while running after drinking the whey protein, then either go on an empty stomach, or have something other than the protein to see if it helps. Pretty much doesn't matter if you did or didn't eat the "right" thing before your workout if you aren't able to complete your workout ya know?

As far as stretching beforehand, stretching by itself is not a warm up, so make sure you warm up, then stretch.

What amount of protein are we talking here and what type?
Empty stomach....just too risky you'll cannibalize muscle and that would just waste time.
Since your body feeds off of sugar and needs that to train you should have a carbed up pre workout meal with electrolytes.
Check this out for help

Protein alone would just cause gluceogenesis....believe me it is something you don't want while working out

The reason you are cramping, if you have food in your stomach is because your body is pumping more blood to your stomach to help break down / digest the food in your stomach and cannot keep up the blood flow to other muscles that need it, it is the same reason they tell you not to swim after you eat. And if you take protein befor, it is harder for some to break it down. I agree with Joey007, you must stretch befor and AFTER you run!! A MUST

thank you for the replies! my dad runs marathons and he said it had something to do with the breathing rhythm that i use... i duno i always just let my lungs loose and breathed with gravity depending on the intensity of the workout... n e ways thanks again! i'll try all these ideas!

btw the whey protein im taking is... i think 26 grams with 20oz or so of water and its 20g protein 4g carbs 2g fats
trainerty... thanks for the link! most people dont cite their points. ill make sure to read that sooner or later :D

I think we need to make a distinction between empty stomach (haven't eaten in an hour) vs. a fasted state (i.e. first thing in the morning after waking up).

cuz its ok to run on an empty stomach, but you should never workout in a fasted state.
