Couple Questions About Running

So, I'm a rather big guy, and I'm trying to really get into shape. I took a run just to see how far I'd go. I went about... 1/10 a mile. Not very impressive. But I'm just wondering if it'll make a difference doing it every day in the long run. I'm not too privy to fitness and health information so I just wanna do some recon before I start killing myself with the run.

Hello!

First, some specifics would be helpful. Big Guy doesn't give much to go with, but at 1/10 of a mile before getting tired, I'll assume your quite overweight and out of shape. No worries, don't be discouraged! It's important to ACCEPT your condition so you can correctly work to improve!

For someone overweight, running isn't really the best option.

First, you should actively work on your diet. Go on google, search calorie calculator, and figure out how many calories it will take to maintain your weight every day. As a rule of thumb, try to eat 500 less calories than this number. This will lose 1 pound a week in pure diet change, regardless of exercise, and will make you more healthy overall!

As for exercise, your main concern should be keeping your heart rate up while not injuring yourself. Injure doesn't have to mean break your leg, it just means hurting yourself to the point that you can't do more cardio the next day.

My advice, would be to start walking everyday, start low at 1 mile. This is about a 20 minute walk at a medium pace. Try to fit your running in, perhaps just 30 seconds at a time, then walk a few minutes. You'll feel your heart rate keep up consistently higher.

If swimming is an option, it is fantastic for overweight people. It can give you a really solid workout and is nearly impossible to injure yourself.

Try to make your goal to simply eat a little better, and work your way until you can run the whole mile. It will take a while, 2 to 3 months, but you will see steady improvement and it is a real obtainable goal you can do!

Hope I helped keep in touch and let us know your progress in a week or two!
