Confessions of a Missionary

Ok, I'm officially fat. The high tech scale I stepped up on a couple of days ago spit out at reciept paper with a zillion numbers on it. At the bottom it said

"Body Type: Generally Overweight"

Well, it didn't say that exactly, because it was in Japanese, but you get the picture. It also mentioned that my physical condition was average for a 57 year old. Now how could a scale know that? No wonder I'm fatigued all the time. I'm 46, trying to make it through the day in a 57 year old body.

So what sins have I committed to get to this point? Well, for one, I got busy and started eating out, and, horror of horrors, mostly at convenience stores.
I've been so busy I had to have something I could eat while driving between jobs. :driving:

Second, (I suppose this is bad) I got addicted to chocolate - the darker the better. However much chocolate there was in the house or car, that's how much I would eat. There hasn't been a left over piece of chocolate in the house for years.

Next, I moved a few miles away from the mountain where I had been hiking in a lot, and got too lazy to drive that far on days off. I tried to climb the stairs to my 11th floor condo as much as I could, but, well, honestly, how often would you do that if it were you?

Then I took on more work at night. I get home at around 9:30 or 10:00, then my daughter and/or I start to make supper. We eat (usually pasta) at around 11:00, or sometimes later, and then fall into bed.

And to top off my alarming list of dietary misdemeanors, I started an online business and took to sitting at the computer every waking moment. Talk about an all out fat cell party!

Ok, so that's the situation, and here's what I'm doing about it. (Yes, I've already started, as of yesterday. Not a long history, but it's way better than "tomorrow")

For exercise, I'm going to a small gym that has a jiggle machine (vibration machine? What do you call those things?) It jostles things around at the equivalent of aobut 4 miles walk in 10 min., and depending on how you stand on it, works out different muscle groups in your body. Comes with an oxygen feed to set in front of your nose, and glass of nasty green water/tea/juice (what IS that stuff?) afterwards to replenish used energy. Then of course the dreaded high tech scales at the end. I'm planning to go for one or two ten min. sessions daily, and of course try to hike some too.

For diet, I've figured out a plan that I think will fit our schedule. If my calculations are correct, it amounts to about 1200 cal. a day.

7:30 two servings of fresh fruit
10:30 egg, bacon, toast, one each
2:00 salad with avocado and tuna
6:00 One rice ball. (Yes, I live in Japan, and that's the basic thing you buy at convenience stores)
9:30 or so boiled tofu with vegetables and fish or chicken. (no starch)

Two pieces of chocolate, and a small carton of yogurt for when I'm starving make 1200 calories.

I'm planning to keep this up for three weeks, or until I've lost 3 kilograms, whichever comes first, and then give myself a day off before I start up again.

Any advice or words of encouragement are welcome!

Debbie

First obstacles

Well, that worked for four whole days!
Then I got so tired, sick, run down and lethargic I couldn't even leave the house. :nopity:

I guess the calorie intake was too low for my metabolism? Anyway, I'm going to have to take it a bit slower. I'll just "eat carefully" for a few days, continue the jiggle machine, and make one huge change in my habits. No starch after 8, no food after 10, and in bed by midnight. That alone should make slow changes.

Once I feel my strenght is back, I'll think about counting calories again, but not quite that low. Perhaps 1500 a day?

Am I thinking right?

Have you used one of the calculators around here to figure out what you're calorie intake should be? Steve has a great post around talking about people eating too little calories

http://weight-loss.fitness.com/topic/9468-starvation-calories-adaptations.html

you might want to check that out, its the first time I've run into someone that has put into words the way I feel about people who just drop their calories without figuring out the best way to do it first.

Here is a calculator, it will give you the calories to maintain your weight, fat loss and extreme fat loss

:waving:Hi, Debbie! Congratulations on your decision to reclaim your health. It is so important that you set a GOOD example for your little girl! I second the advice that you research exactly the # of calories required for your height, etc. in order to lose weight healthfully.

OMGosh, I laughed out loud  when I was picturing "the jiggle machine" - it sounds like something from a Lucille Ball show! I can just picture her jiggling on it while trying to drink a glass of green glop...LOL Can't wait to hear if it actually works for you! I hope so.

Anyway, best wishes on your journey!

LOL,

Thanks guys, for your posts!
I wasn't getting the results I wanted from the jiggle machine, so they changed my routine. It's much harder now, as I have to sort of squat on it, and I think my legs are going to break before the 10 min. is over, but guess what? I did it once, and suddenly, my pants are falling off of me! Not much weight loss yet, but losing size is good.

After one time (last Friday) I lost my membership card, and had to help a friend move, so I'll be going back today for me second session of the stepped up version. It will be interesting to see my numbers!

Off I go to see what my calories should be. I just bought a new convection oven, and no matter what the suggestions are, I doubt they allow for coffee-oatmeal-chocolate-walnut-whole wheat cookies. Sigh.:piggy:

Woo Hoo! I just checked the calorie calculator!
I wonder, does the jiggle machine count for excersize? It claims to provide both aerobic and anaerobic excercise, depending on your posture and the speed you choose, and is said to equal walking 6 kilometers in 10 min (at my current speed), so I'm going to say yes.

If that's the case, and I go every day. (Now they have me on the machine for two 10 min. sessions, so thats the equivalent of walking 12 kilometers). I get to eat 2100 calories a day for maintenance, and 1700 for weight loss!

Hey. What flavor of cookies shall I make next? :piggy:

Well, it's Jan 26 and I've had a small personal victory. My weight hasn't started to drop, but the Fat level is down, and so is my internal age. it was up to 59, but has dropped to 55.

Another great sign is, yesterday I really, really wanted to get out and walk. I think that might be my metabolism changing just ever so slightly.
