Confessions of a Cube Rat Junk Food Vegetarian

I'm starting a new weight loss journal because I still want to get down to 140 pounds (my optimal weight) and because even though I became a vegetarian/semi-vegan over the summer and lost a bunch of weight (almost 40 pounds!) I am still hovering stubbornly around the 190 pounds mark, and eight hours a day of sitting in a corporate cubicle is not helping.

Neither is the coming winter, which is driving me into a pseudo-hibernation state where I drag around everywhere, can't get out of bed, go to bed early, and inhale every carby disaster food in a fifteen foot ratio of my person.

I am turning into a junk food vegetarian. This journal is my secret weapon to combat that, and actually stay on top of eating healthy, not just eating compassionately. I'll probably experiment with raw diet and/or increased vegan consumption in the near future, since I'm leaning that way as it is.

-- How much weight do you want to lose?
50 pounds or about 22.7 kg

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
I'm just going to give myself a year-long timeframe and see how I do - by Halloween 2010, I want to be lithe!

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?

Cutting out all fast food and sodas, cutting back on alcohol significantly, drinking almost entirely black coffee and water, sticking to a vegetarian plan, reducing consumption of simple starches and dairy, leaning towards complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables, increasing my exercise in various ways (hiking, walking, etc...). I'm also going to track my nutrition and goals on SparkPeople.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
My roommate, who is also a vegetarian/semi-vegan and would have no problem following (and helping to prepare) a low-fat, healthy diet that would help me lose weight.

-- How realistic is your goal?
I think it's pretty realistic - 50 pounds in a year isn't too much, and I lost almost 40 pounds just this summer by going vegetarian.

-- When will you start?
Today.

1. What is your current height and weight?

I’m 5'4'' and 189 pounds.

2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
140 pounds.

3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
At least 170 pounds.

4. Why do you want to lose weight?
To boost my self confidence, increase my physical attractiveness, be a healthy, motivated walking endorsement for vegetarianism, and instill a sense of discipline/routine.

5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
Not really.

6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Holiday fare, emotional binge eating, and culinary laziness. Also my sedentary lifestyle, which will be difficult to adjust since we are going to have one of the coldest winters apparently in like forever. Just got to get used to indoor exercise I guess!

7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
I don't get enough exercise, I eat stuff I shouldn't, and I have some emotional baggage. Am I in the club? :p

8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
Diet tracking and making an effort to go out and do things that are physically active.

9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
I lost a ton of weight to join the military through an extreme exercise regimen (two hours of cardio a day, weight training 3x a week) with sensible eating, changed my mind and gained it back, went vegetarian and lost some again, and now it's creeping back up.

10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
Processed foods, laziness, lack of vigilance.

11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
Diet pills. They make me sick as a dog.

12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
That's what I'm doing now at SparkPeople.

13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
Since we are vegetarian we cook at home a LOT. Our meals are usually a starch + a vegetable entree w/non-animal protein + a vegetable side dish. We don't eat enough fruit and we probably don't get enough protein either. Last night, for example, we had bell peppers stuffed with tomatoes, mushrooms and couscous and a side of potatoes w/ cabbage.

14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
I have gotten into a bad habit of grabbing a cheese-and-egg sandwich w/ tater tots at Sonic for breakfast (no more!) and when we are feeling particularly lazy for dinner, we will order a vegetarian pizza from Papa John's or Chinese takeout.

15. What are your three favorite foods?
Stir fry, drop biscuits, and mixed berries.

16. What are your three favorite restaurants?
China Moon, Donato's, and Mikato's.

17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
Drink more water, make sure to eat enough (low-fat) protein, and make sure to eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables.

18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
I’d probably go hiking naked.

19. Do you eat when you are not hungry?
Yes, when I'm bored or distressed.

20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
Sometimes.

21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
Yes, although I realize it's a problem when I do it.

22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
All of the above.

23. Do you eat as a reward?
Not really.

24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
We usually eat in front of a movie.

25. What do you normally eat for a meal?
Vegetarian stir fry, Spanish rice, vegetable soup, salad, roasted vegetables, tofu, all kinds of things. We are always trying new recipes.

26. What type of snacks do you eat?
Lately it's been bag chips and other horrible processed foods. I'm trying to convert over to fresh-cut fruits and vegetables instead.

27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
Before today, I haven't exercised since the summer.

28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym?
I used to have a gym membership but I had to cut it out for financial reasons. Now I am planning to exercise from home, and throw in some exercise at work as well.

29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
Walking, hiking, swimming.

30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
To be physically beautiful.

31. Do you have rewards for certain goals?
No, but I need to think of some. Maybe a new novel or movie if I reach a goal?

Breakfast:
- 2 cups of water
- 1 large banana
- 2/3rds of a package of mixed nuts

Notes: Need to bring fruit from home; gas station fruit is expensive. At least I managed to sneak in about a serving and a half of fruit for breakfast. Also need to choose a different protein option than nuts, because I didn't realize there were three servings of nuts in that tiny sleeve and gobbled more than half of them before I realized I was eating 30 grams of fat. Gah!!! Tofu say what?

Lunch:
- 4 cups of water
- 2 small bowls of hot and sour soup w/ crispy noodles

Notes: I am not counting Chinese as a "fast food" (at least for today) but I need to avoid it in the future. Going grocery shopping tonight, so I will be able to get stuff to bag my lunch, even if that means making my own soup and bringing it to work. I'm a sucker for warm, hot, savory stuff. Doing good on water intake though!

Hello Maverick,

Good to see you back!!! Looks like you've got a great plan, and CONGRATULATIONS on the Lifestyle Change & WEIGHT LOSS!! WoW 40 lbs in just the Summer.

That Bell Pepper meal with the couscous looked divine. NOM :drool5:

Hope you're doing well.

Take Care :seeya:

Hey RG, thanks for the welcome! It's good to be back!

Snack:
- 8 saltine crackers
- 4 cups of water

Dinner:
- two slices of veggie pizza (mushrooms, spinach, black olives)
- two cheesesticks
- 1 1/2 beers

Notes: Ugh, didn't do so well on dinner because I came home and realized that we had NO groceries - no mushrooms, no potatoes, no sesame oil, nada. And since we live in BFE, where the nearest vegetarian-friendly grocery is a half hour away, we ended up ordering pizza instead. I'm going to count this fallback as a victory though, since I only ate two slices of pizza when I normally would have binged and ate half of it. :leaving:

RL: Yesterday morning, I woke up to find my pillow plastered with dead and dying ladybugs which have come in from outside. They were all over my room, in my bed, etc... It was disgusting.

So, should I note, is my room on a typical basis. The whole house is spotless because my roomie lost his job in the recession and instead of getting him to go out and get a McJob, he's staying at home and playing wifey. So the whole house stays clean, dinner is usually on the table within a little while of me getting home, and it's just nice to have someone to come home to. To me it's totally worth the lost income. I'd rather he stay home with an apron on. :p

But my room has been the only spot of CHAOS in this whole scenario, because I'm a writer, and eccentric, and a sloooooooooob (just in the bedroom!) Dirty clothes mixed with clean clothes on the floor, books and papers everywhere, a general catastrophe.

That being the case, the ladybug situation was an especially big pain in the ass. So I went off to work yesterday morning all dejected because I knew I'd have to clean my room before this weekend, when we have company coming.

But lo and behold, guess what surprise I came home to???

A: My room, absolutely spotless in my roommate's special way. Floor vacuumed, dead bugs evacuated, possessions organized, bed linens cleaned.

I was floored. So was he when I gave him a big hug instead of being offended.

Daily exercise: Walking - 15 minutes; Dancing around in my cubicle with giant headphones on - Priceless. (I mean, 15 minutes.)

Morning Weigh-in: Pizza or no pizza, I must be doing something right, because when I woke up this morning I was 185. Yay!!!!

Breakfast:
- 3 cups of black unsweetened coffee
- an orange
- remainder of mixed nuts package
- 4 cups water

RL: I actually made my bed this morning. Believe me, if you knew me personally, you would see that this is a positive step of monumental proportions on the housekeeping front. I hope my roommate notices, since he went through such trouble to clean my room yesterday.

RL Early Bird Awesome News: I just checked my direct deposit, and I GOT A RAISE. WOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Almost $60 a paycheck! I knew I was up for one, but I haven't had my year end review yet, so I didn't know for sure one way or the other...

*does the happy money dance*

I declare that there is NOT anything better than an unexpected raise!!!!!! Especially when one is trying to pay down a ridiculous amount of college credit card debt and improving the ol' eco-homestead with some greenhouses and solar generators.

I've had to resist the urge to go around the cube farm doing backflips and cartwheels this morning, but that would be uncouth.

In unrelated (and probably unnecessary) news, I will be really glad when my body gets used to intaking all this fresh cold water, because I am tired of having to pee every ten minutes. :p

And in somewhat-related news, I just realized this morning while getting dressed that every pair of pants I own is at least a size too large. The ones I'm wearing now feel like a diaper they're so baggy in the back. Good news, but not so flattering...need a new pair of jeans expeditiously!

Ego Boost: When I was showing my cube-mate my Halloween tee-shirt (which I am a little self-conscious about because it's women's style and actually form-fitting, while most of the stuff I wear are really tee-shirts...) she said: "Gah, you're getting so skinny! Makes me think about going vegetarian too if it works that well!"

(How she could call me skinny at 185 pounds is a wonder, but whatever - it made my morning!!! :D)

Maverick...First of all, you're hilarious. Just saying.

Also, I think you are going to do really well losing the weight you are aiming for. Based on your Q&A, it definitely sounds like you know where your weaknesses are, and that's the first step to avoiding them. I also think a food journal is a great idea. It's the only thing that has ever worked for me. I haven't heard of SparkPeople, but have used FitDay, DailyPlate and DailyBurn before, as well as just keeping my own pen and paper journal. It's a great strategy.

I know you are vegetarian/semi-vegan, but have you considered adding any protein supplements to your diet? This was another thing that I added this go around and has really seemed to make a difference for me. I get mine online at . What I get is a whey protein powder, but next month (which is so close already, where did this year go?!) they are supposed to be coming out with a vegetable protein powder that is suitable for vegans. Could be something worth looking into.

Anyway, GOOD LUCK! I think you will do great!

Hey Maverick,

It sounds like you have a pretty good plan going ... can I ask why the choice to become vegan? Is it an ethical choice or do you think it's healthier or ... ? I'm genuinely curious just because I think I can help you with some food choices and meal planning. :)

I'd suggest pumping up your breakfasts a bit with some oats or quinoa and some soymilk, rather than crackers and water.

Also there are other sources of protein besides nuts and tofu.

Most whole grains (oats, barley, quinoa, etc.) have a good bit of protein. Lentils are very protein rich. Also beans of all kinds are a great source of protein.

Tofu is a great source of complete proteins (containing all the amino acids) but you need to watch your soy intake - eating too much of it has been associated with estrogen issues.

Lunch:
- 1 can Campbell's tomato soup (cal 120, fat 0)
- 2 cups water

Note: I had a banana on my lunch menu, but I was so full I couldn't even eat it. Boo.

Midday Exercise:
- 20 minute walk, unpaved, flat terrain

Note: I'm going to start doing this walk every day, because it's a good stretch on my lunch break. When I went today I grabbed a piece of foxtail grass, and I decided I'm going to grab a piece for every day that I go out there, just to keep track of how much time I am spending in exercise during the workday.

Part of me is currently insane with jealousy over my officemates and their delicious greasy takeout lunches. Part of me is secretly triumphant in the healthy food choices I've been making instead. :p

I'm currently being tortured by my friend's monster-sized pulled pork stuffed baked potato, but the more rational side of me knows from personal experience that in an hour or so, she'll be moaning with indigestion and beating herself up over eating it.

That more rational part of me also knows that this same friend (and I love her to death) talks a lot of game about losing weight, but continues to eat stuff like the stuffed potato, which has these nutritional stats (which I pulled up and calculated solely to make myself feel better - so sue me):

Her lunch:
Serving Size: 1 potato
Calories: 1580
Fat: 31g
Sodium: 795mg
Carbs: 158g

I mean, damn. 1580 calories? That's a day's worth!

Suddenly soup and a banana doesn't look half bad.

Thanks! *blush*

I think I'm abandoning SparkPeople, since they gauged my daily caloric intake at 1,480 and that is impossible. I calculated it by hand using my BMR and it was closer to 1,700 at the low-end. From now on I'm just going to keep a food journal here and measure my fat/calorie intake.

I know you are vegetarian/semi-vegan, but have you considered adding any protein supplements to your diet? This was another thing that I added this go around and has really seemed to make a difference for me.

I haven't considered it, but I'll definitely have to look into it! I do think I am having issues getting enough protein into my diet, especially low-fat options. Woman cannot live on mixed nuts alone. ;)

Anyway, GOOD LUCK! I think you will do great!

Thanks again, and good luck to you too Heather! Thanks for the diary love. :beating:

It sounds like you have a pretty good plan going ... can I ask why the choice to become vegan? Is it an ethical choice or do you think it's healthier or ... ? I'm genuinely curious just because I think I can help you with some food choices and meal planning.

It's mostly an ethical decision after watching an animal exploitation documentary called Earthlings (it's narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, great movie, very sad). You can see the trailer here: The whole thing is on Youtube.

I also think it's healthier, which I feel is pretty self-evident based on the fact that I have dropped so much extra weight so quickly, doing nothing but cutting all meat and a majority of dairy/egg products out of my diet.

If you could help me with some food choices, that would be great; your suggestions are sound ones.

We don't really eat too many soy-based products - we get most of our protein from beans. This is because of the estrogen thing, as well as the fact that me and my roomie are anti-GMO (Genetically Manipulated Organism) agricultural activists, and a lot of soy products in the U.S. are made with GMO soybeans. I love me some veggie burgers though.

I am not such a fan of soymilk, but we do keep coconut milk for cooking (and never with too much of it, since it's so fatty). I am thinking of starting to make some "green" smoothies for breakfast though, with spinach, banana, protein powder, and other deliciousness. I think if I mixed almond milk into the smoothies instead of coconut milk, I'd save myself a ton of calories and fat.

We keep a pretty vegan kitchen at home (non-dairy substitutes for milk, eggs, and butter, but we don't really check labels that stringently for dairy in pasta or other sundries) but we will eat dairy and egg products outside of the home just for the sake of convenience. I come from a family of major meat-eaters - like, two kinds of meat at every meal meat-eaters.

They think I've lost my friggin' mind.

Thanks so much for your input Kara, and thanks for dropping by my diary!

Hey glad I can help! :)

You might try signing up for fitday.com or thedailyplate.com. On both of those you can override the calorie settings and set your own calorie levels. I find it really helpful to log my food so I can keep track of my nutrient levels - proteins and carbs and so forth.

Have you ever tried almond milk? It's actually quite good - a little sweet, but I have it in cereal a lot.

One thing that I love to do for breakfast in the winters is to use my crockpot to cook a batch of steel cut oats and then add a can of pumpkin, some cinnamon, and some ginger to it. Then sweeten with whatever you like for sweetener. It's a sort of pumpkin pie oatmeal - massively nutritious and full of protein. If I make a double batch, I can then put it in the fridge and just scoop out enough for my breakfast every morning ... makes it really fast.

I did FitDay last time and really liked it, but I think I'm going to try The Daily Plate this time (on high recommendation from peeps here!) and see how it goes.

I haven't, but I've had rice milk and really like that kind. Hempmilk was meh. Coconut milk is the one that we keep on hand because we feel like the creaminess of it imitates dairy milk well in recipes and it's not overly sweet. Just looked up the stats for the So Delicious Coconut Milk that we buy, and it's actually not too bad. I guess it's the straight-up coconut milk from a can that is high fat.

OMG, yum! Sounds perfect for country life, since it gets pretty cold in our trailer first thing in the morning. I have never really eaten oatmeal that often (my dad hated it growing up, and we were eggs-bacon-biscuits-sausage people) but that recipe sounds awesome!!!

Thanks again! :D

Ugh, bad snack.

Snack:
- bag of mini pretzels (330 cal)
- 1/2 Spicy V-8 (35 cal)
- few swallows of Pepsi (<150 cal)

*sigh*

One of my goals for weight loss is not drinking soda, but I was struck down with such a bad headache from caffeine withdrawal that I had to go get a Pepsi or risk a migraine. Two sips and the headache (which I would have put at a 7 out of 10 on the pain scale) is already almost gone. Addiction say what?

Anybody have any ideas for a decently-healthy afternoon caffeine fix that does not involve soda or coffee? Everyone else in the office is usually done drinking coffee by three, and I'd hate to make a pot just for myself when all I really need is a few swallows of caffeiny goodness to make sure a migraine doesn't lay me low.

Tea. Iced tea, green tea, black tea - all have caffeine. I would try a cup of green tea in the afternoons.

Also if it gets really bad and you feel a migraine coming on, you can drink something like a Diet Mt. Dew or a Diet Red Bull. I don't recommend them as a regular thing, but my former BIL went through horrible caffeine withdrawals when he was diagnosed with Lupis and had to give it up and his doctor told him that a few sips of either of those to ward off a headache was ok .. just don't drink a whole one.

Tea. Iced tea, green tea, black tea - all have caffeine. I would try a cup of green tea in the afternoons.

Oh DUR. I totally didn't even think of tea!!!! Iced black tea is one of my favorites, I bet some cool iced green tea would be killer in the afternoons and help speed up my metabolism too. Thanks Kara!! *lovelove*

Dinner (on which I am waiting with bated breath):
- French cut green beans
- Onion garlic toast
- Oven-roasted potatoes
- "Chicken" flavored rice with carrots and peas
- Wine (probably half a bottle, I'm not gonna lie to my own journal)

We still didn't get to the grocery store because the weather is bad, but we are going tomorrow!

Skinny Update: I stopped by the store to get some pants that actually fit for my year end review tomorrow and I'm down into a size 12. Woot!

My dad was drinking when I stopped by to try on my jeans for my mother and him. He gets really mean when he drinks whiskey and takes painkillers (for his back) and he said something that was really hateful about my roommate. It pissed me off royally because I was in such a good mood up to that point and so excited to be showing off my skinny(ier) jeans that when he tried to joke it off and tell me he was only "agitating" me and that I had to put up with it, I told him flat out that no, I didn't have to put up with it, because I'm 24 and I don't live there anymore. So then instead of hanging out for a minute like I usually do, I stormed out (in my own stoic, monosyllabic way - he knew he ****ed up).

Then I cried all the way home and that's the real reason I didn't go to the grocery store.

*sigh*

But now I'm home and we're gonna get our wine on and watch a scary movie and nom some grindage (within reason!!!), so I DO NOT EVEN CARE. Nobody is going to ruin my Friday night. Huzzah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :willy_nilly:

Hi Maverick,

That's gettin'er done! I am sorry to hear you've had to go through that with your Father.

Congratulations on your raise! That is very exciting!

How was your Halloween Evening? I completely forgot the whole thing.

I drink unsweetened Almond Milk, I hear the regular is quite sweet though, and I'd had enough of substitute milks tasting overtly sweet! I'd like to give the coconut milk a shot, I have yet to do so.

TTYL

gotta ask - would half a bottle of wine get you drunk?

Not drunk drunk, just tipsy. I'm a cheap drunk by admittance and we buy strong wines. But I drank half of two bottles, so it's all good. ;)

Went a bit wild over the Halloween weekend, including a binge (ugh). Here's my stats:

Saturday (Halloween Night - went out of town to hang out with friends):
- one bag of twisty BBQ Fritos
- two slices of mushroom-and-black-olive pizza & garlic sauce
- four cheesesticks & marinara
- three Jack-and-Cokes

Sunday:
- one sleeve of hashbrowns
- one medium black coffee
- plate of udon stir fry with English peas, fresh carrots, snow peas, copious amounts of marinated tofu, and broccoli in homemade hoisin sauce
- bowl of ramen noodles with soy sauce, lemongrass, and chili paste
- 1 glass of chocolate wine
- 3 glasses of red wine

Sunday Night Binge:
- 1 sleeve of saltine crackers (yikes!)
- Halloween candy: 3 mini Milky Ways

Notes: Other than one relatively healthy plate of stir fry yesterday afternoon, I did my junk food vegetarian moniker justice this weekend. I'm gonna blame it on Samhain madness and move on with my water-drinking, produce-munching life.

Have my year end review at work today. Yikes!!!!!!! (luckily, I know they've already given me a raise, so they won't be firing me.)

How sweet to go into a review KNOWING you'll do fine. I was a wreck last year during mine - fortunately the evaluator liked me and my review was downright glowing (to the point of embarrassing!) LMAO

I will admit to eating more than I should have this weekend -and there was a lot of salt involved. I'll be drinking water by the gallon for the next few days and doing my best to eat well. Damn halloween treats!
