Concerned about ankles

I am looking for some advice about whether or not i should be worried about my ankles when exercising. Today i did mostly walking around the track, but also 2 laps jogging slowly. After each lap (i took a break between the jogging laps of about 5 minutes) my left ankle hurt quite a bit. I know my weight puts alot of pressure on my joints. Should i be concerned about this, or is it ok? I would like to keep jogging.

Pain is a warning sign at best and a sign of an injury at worst.

If the pain does not die down altogether after resting then get medical advice.

Have you checked your Gait? are your trainers newish? (trainers have a life span of about 6 months), do you stretch well (incl. holding the correct posture when resting- many people don't and it renders the stretch pointless)? do you take rest days each week? have you just upped your workout suddently? all these things can make a difference.

If I were you, I would stick with walking right now until you've lost more weight and it is less impact on your ankles. I had warning signs of back problems and when I didn't listen to them and continued doing what I was doing, it got much, much worse. Listen to your pain. And remember, you burn just about the same amount of calories going the same distance simply walking. The minimal increase in calories you get from jogging instead is not worth hurting yourself over.

Thanks for the replies. I just started jogging, so it is indeed a increase in activity. I think i'll take it slowly and see how it goes. It is not horrible pain, and i already asked a Dr about it and was told not to worry.

In addition (and i should have made this clear) i only have pain for like 1 min after doing the jogging. It goes away after that.

Thats how I felt with posterior tibial tendonitis!

This was pain I overrode, 5 mins of agony then fine for the next 10 mins, however it would come back much worse thereafter.

Its important if you do have an injury to get it looked at. Muscular problems work differently from ligament issues and differently from bone issues. Each require a different sort of recovery and so it is important to get it checked out and identified. I have pain in my lower inner calf, its where a major muscle was. An ankle is a very complex body part and has major ligaments which when they become injured can really get you down. It could be nothing to do with the ligaments but just be aware its a part of the body which does require you to be careful as its so easy to damage.

Thank you very much for the information! :) Hm, maybe then it is best not to do too much jogging until i lose weight. I am fine when walking, doing cardio on machines etc...it is only during the jogging that it bugs me. So perhaps as another poster mentioned it is not worth the potential trouble it could cause.

Update...did zumba class today and nothing hurting at all (except my poor cardiovascular capacity lol)...so either it is just from jogging or has gone away.

Sounds like your gait.

Most likely :0 I have never in my life been a jogger/runner :)
