Sport Coming out of starvation mode

When reviewing some information about cutting and how taking breaks from your calorie deficite every few months is important, a question came to me. If somone were in starvation mode prior to undertaking a healthy style of eating, what effect would this have on their cutting? Prior to attempting to cut, should the individual bring up their caloretic intake to maintenence and then cut or will bringing it up to a 500 calorie deficit work?
