Cold intolerance

I have lost a decent amount of weight since last winter, about 60 pounds, and find myself extremely cold most of the time as the weather gets colder. In the past I have never really had problems with being cold. I know it is not a thyroid problem because I have been tested for that, and I am still overweight for my height so I know it is because I am too thin. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or if it is all in my head? any input is helpful

Yes, I have lost 40 pounds recently, and, even though I have always hated the cold, I find as this fall has come upon me, that I am extremely cold most of the time. I am at my goal weight...so I just assume I have no isulation left to help me stay warm???

Yeah, I've had a similar experience. Having lost this weight, the cold affects me much more than it used to. However, I've also noticed I don't get quite so hot during the summer, which it's heading into right now. You win some, you lose some :)

Totally. Remember that you've lost a great deal of "insulation". I used to laugh at my mom and friends who were wearing sweaters when it was 65/70 deg out.
Now I'm one of those people.

It is just a basic fact. When you are fat, means to say you have fat in your body, you can resist cold to a large degree, but on losing fat,it is obvious that you can feel much colder than it used to be earlier.

I'm noticing it now, too.

I was more comfortable than usual during the summer, and now I am cold, even when it is only zero outside.

Ditto here with the loss of bio-insulation. :p

Doesn't help that we rarely use the heater at the farm, but my extremities in particular have been practically ICY all autumn. And we're supposed to get the coldest winter here in decades. Sheesh.

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread so I don't feel like such a winter wimp. I used to kind of hate summer and love winter (good thing since I live in Michigan). But over the last 7 months I've shed 80 pounds, and I can't beleive how cold I am this winter! Being a science nerd, I was doing some reading in the medical literature about influcences of insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome and the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamus/limbic systems (both of which are instrumental in thermoregulation). Although not totally accepted as mainstream these authors laid out a good basis for the connection which I could totally buy into as I saw the changes they were describing happening in my own body. I clearly had an overactive sympathetic nervous system (sweating, gag reflex, anxiety, etc), and I clearly had metabolic syndrome (high bp, abdominal fat, high triglyceride/HDL ratio). ALL of those things have gone away since I changed my diet, started eating reasonably (including really cutting back...but not out...alcohol), started exercising, and of course lost all the weight.

So, while there may be some loss of insulative capacity, I'm pretty convinced that it's more of a shift in the way your body is working. It no longer has to deal with the enormous amount of LDL and tryglyceride, which it would do by metabolizing with a loss of energy as heat.

I only hope that I'm not as miserable as I used to be when summer gets here :)

I also have to apologize to my wife for dismissing her complaints about being cold all the time. For some reason, she's not all that sympathetic to me when I complain lately :)

Peace

Dave

It may have to do with your metabolism slowing down, which happens due to the weight loss and due to your body adapting to the calorie reduction. Slower metabolism means you are burning less calories, which means your internal heater has been turned down.

from my experience and friends experiences, its a bit of column a and bit of column b.

Mostly, you've lost 60 lbs of insulation (congrats on that btw). Note that insulation is a two way street. it was previously holding the cold out as well as holding the heat in.

Part of it can be your metabolism being a bit slower from dieting and weight loss. Also you're not burning as many calories to maintain your mass. Calories = heat.

Like LFG said, you'll probably notice a lack of overheat in summer as well now.

I feel the cold a lot worse these days too...

My husband used to thinkthat I was just making it all up - but he was surprised when the doctor was talking about changes that happen for people who have lost a lot of weight (e.g. dermatitis) and the doctor said that I would feel the cold a lot worse.

My husband is a lot more sympathetic now about my wish to have the central heating on much higher than he would like.

I have the same thing happening... the thermostat says it *should* be 70-something degrees in the house, and yet I am FREEZING!!! It seems like the upstairs rooms are even worse (where my bedroom happens to be, and where I am sitting and typing right now) I'm quite literally sitting my chair, shivering!:( It's such a pain! It doesn't help that I'm sick again, I suppose, but I could use some blankets!!!

Un Comfortable.. I have always been happier in the winter than the Summer, and now that i will loose my tollerance for cold without increasing my tollerance for heat...

and air conditioning in Virginia is almost Dejure... eeeee

Hot and cold within 10 minutes,

I am now down to my equilibrium weight, 285... I have been hitting this yearly since 2003... and am exercising to reduce my weight to break out the the Type II hole...

and Zumba Fitness is working well for it... if only it would keep tracking and not keep calling every one "Guest #" half way through it...
