Chin-ups

Yeah, by improving i mean increasing reps. I just meant that there is no point comparing your reps to anyone elses. If you add just one rep every week then its still progress.

LMAO!... I love that video you posted Garddawg... perfect example of how not to do a pull-up :) I saved that on my computer...

Right on cannavaro... I 'dislike it with a passion' people coming here and comparing themselves to other people... Your health/fitness is about you and self satisfaction... I know a guy that is an absolute twig, but he can do more pull-ups than me... Good Job for him, he can have a cookie.... I like the way I am and don't need to compare it to anyone else..

If you don't want to compare yourself to others.....why would you ever post to a thread whose topic is how many chin ups can you do? :p The pull ups shown are kipping pull ups, not strict. How are they "wrong"?

Because you're just using momentum to pull you up, so it's just a crutch for something you can't do... I'd be okay to do that when you start getting tired, but you shouldn't do them for entire sets .

Dex,
I understand your point. However, I would contend it is a seperate movement and worth learning and only a crutch if you cannot do the other. I do pull ups kipping, deadhang with a 2 second pause at top and bottom and weighted. (For Cannavaro's sake I won't post my numbers or any video. ;) ). My point with the kipping pull up is that its not wrong. I concede the point that you are using momentum. However there is a huge metabolic demand placed on you to do them this way. The movement becomes a whole body movement doing it this way as well. It is also a more functional movement and translates to the real world better than the standard pull up. The LEO and Mil guys we train who have taken the time to learn this movement and apply it in their workouts are able to go over walls and fences faster and more smoothly than their compatriots who stick with traditional deadhang pull ups.
Also, it opens the shoulders in a way that almost nothing else does. If you watched someone doing kettlebell swings you wouldn't tell him he was wrong for explosively opening his hip to drive the bell up, or for using the momentum of the bell to help create the explosive hip pop. The same is true, but for the shoulders, with the kipping pull up.

There is nothing wrong with doing either type, the ones I do are more of a grind while the ones you shoed are ballistic. Its probably a good idea to do both in fact.

cannavaro,
I like you're 5-1-5 going to try that tomorrow. As you said, best to do both. Brute strength is developed with the no kipping deadhang pull up, while power is best developed with the kipping variety.
