Casually Observing the Secret of Strength Training

We had an interesting conversation in the gym today. This is something I have believed pretty much since I started strength training. I think this is the secret to strength training.

If you have been training hard, you must be stronger.

Here is a discussion my training partner and I had today for example. We were doing Bulgarian Squats -

We trained up to my training partners PR on the lift. 320lbs.

I said. "Lets add 50lbs." (I like adding 50lbs. It is a round number and I am often too lazy to deal with smaller plates)

"Dude. That is my PR!!" he says.

"The last time we did this lift was like 6 weeks ago."

"Yea."

"You have been training hard."

"Yea."

"You must be stronger, so lift the bigger weight."

So he did. For 4 reps each leg.

This really proved something for me. It doesn't really matter what the program looks like. If you are training hard, strength must be higher. So put more weight on the bar.

That is the real secret. Really buy into the idea that you must be stronger. Believe it in your soul. "As long as I am training hard. Strength must be going up."

This is simply believing that you must be stronger. Obviously if training has been hard, everything is better. So adding weight to the bar is the only possible course of action.

Sure, you might not be using the best program. Don't worry, in 10 years you will be a lot smarter and making a lot better decisions about training. You still will not have the best program. So really buy into what you are doing. Assume that more strength must be there.

If you are training hard, the strength is there. Case closed.

The secret of strength.

Or my take on it anyhow. ;):):D:cool:

Let's see...you made this post on V-Day. This must be you sharing your wisdom with me and indicating that you love me.

Well I love you too buddy :beerchug:

Lol...I know I'm eating this **** up, but when you say "put more weight on the bar."...that's it right there. Some people train hard as hell but sometimes doing the wrong thing is just doing the wrong thing. I used to talk with a lot of traditional martial artists :11doh:

Are you sure the secret isn't the Vibro-plate?

It simultaneously tones your buns and scrambles eggs for a PWO snack

awsome post! yeah, just add some weight, and don't think "well this is too much" if you've been training hard, you will get it! :D

I can be lifting low/mod weights and cardio, working really hard. But its not going to improve my strength incredibly or at least a new pb. will it not? :p

I have been weight training now too, so I want to add something. At 4 miles into that race last weekend, I looked at the mile clock, quick division, and relized I was running 8 flats. I thought thru my training, adding the weights, improving my pose/posture, and just agreed- I must be faster and smoother than I thought, let's run! we did, and it turned out to be a personal best by a mile.

on the other hand, wednesday night I went to try and power clean that 225, and could barely get it off the floor. So, timing may be important too.

Thanks for the positive comments guys!! You are the coolest.

flyinfree GETS IT. YEA!!! :jump1:

Lets hear some more "I must be better" Stories. :beerchug:

Great read, George.

But you are the secret to strength training, dont ever stop adding mental weight to the brain! It will allow you to train, strain, and put much power in your veins; it unleashes Georges' brain chains and the power of George remains.

Great post!

Ask this to yourself: If you were maxing out and stuck in the middle about to fail and someone put a gun to your head would you get it up?

Yea, that's badass. I know sometimes I just puss out, I'll admit it, like I get into this thinking "I could maybe do 10 reps but I only FEEL like doing 8". But the type of philosophy you're talking about is the kind of stuff I say to myself to pump me up. If you're already training hard, then your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones are all going to be hardened up to be able to handle more weight, so this is just the mental transition. That's badass, nice post!

very useful observation!

SNIP!

I had a similar conversation with an "exercise advisor". I'm 56 and began weight training last June after losing 40lbs. It's been my goal to recover my upper body strength and I'd been stuck at 120lbs with the assisted chin-up. So after hearing this, he says "BS- you can pull 160 if you're doing reps at 120."
And he was right!!
Not many - but I can't remember how many years its been since I've done unassisted pullups!

So this was great advice - and absolutely true. You just gotta go for it.

I was looking for this yesterday because since I read it last week I've been putting plates on nicely:) and I was thinking I was going nowhere....this post gave me a massive boost!

nice one
