Cardio + Weight Training = Counter-Productive?

I have a concern regarding cardio vs. weight training. I'm currently exercising to gain muscle mass, sculpt my body, and my weight is not a concern at all. However I've also been doing some cardio work. It is counter-productive do both weights and cardio? I normally go to the gym and spend 15-20 on an x-trainer or stationary bike, or I ride my bike to the gym, then I lift weights. When I do cardio work it's not just a light ordeal, I put a lot of effort into it. I realize that you need to get the blood flowing before you can lift, but am I spending too much time doing cardio before hand? and burning muscle beforehand.

Hi there

I never realized what I do might end up being counter productive. Slightly differennt scenario. I am deemed overweight (even though I dont look one) and have to knockdown from 173 to 148. In the last 22 days I have dropped to 162 with rigorous 90Mins weight training 4 days a week and 3 days of Spinning (30Mins) during non weight training days. I also supplement my diet with Hot-Rox and Whey.

I do not want to lose muscles but lean mass is my priority. Please advice

I lift 50% of my working weight to warm up. I never do cardio to warm up.

cardio won't warm up your upper body very well, and certainly not through the full range of motion for chest presses and lat exercises.

I think an elliptical would do a decent job warming up the entire body as long as you didnt use the stationary handles.
