Cardio or Weights first

I sparked a debate with one of my friends. I'm almost sure you guys said that do weight training before cardio and that if you do weights first your fresher and can lift more. Make better gains, etc. This sounds logical if your looking to get stronger/bigger.

But what if your primary focus is conditioning say for running 1-3 miles. Should you do weights or cardio first? Shouldn't you do the task first, that your training for.

Standapart that is not the answer. That is if your focusing on building your body. I said if your primary focus is conditioning for running 1-3. thanks tho.

Cannavaro. I know its possible to do them separately but they run into the same day for some people.

Do the separately
I agree with cannavaro... You're only confusing your energy systems. Do you want to train your aerobic energy system or your anaerobic? Split them into seperate training days for sure.

Its not even for myself. I just was wondering what the answer to the question is and as I said for some people they have to do them on the same day.

Well, you if you HAVE to do them together, just acknowledge that you are not going to excel at either under those circumstances and do your best (or tell your friend to do his best). Running before weights will reduce your maximal strength/force output. Lifting before running will greatly reduce your speed and stamina. In addition to that, running will undo a lot of your hypertrophy specific work in the end. You will see a marked decrease in leg mass.

If you run b4 lifting you are more likely to be weak and injure yourself as well as having poor, ineffective form and poor strength potential.

If you lift b4 running then you will also reduce your capacity to perform and will increase risk of injury.

There is no wrong or right answer. If you follow an hours strength with an hours cardio or vice versa you are overtarining and will become catabolic.

whatever you're training for, do that first! If your goal is to increase running endurance, then you need spend most of your time training it. Don't exhaust yourself by lifting first.

My guess is that, if they are training for running conditioning, hypertrophy and strength is not going to be a major goal, and an icrease in mass could decrease your production in a long-term running event.

In this case, a circuit training lifting program will suffice, whic will not require you to have to have great amounts of energy for the resistance part of your workout.

yes if you split them up it is beneficial. I wish I could myself. It gives your body the chance to recover from whatever you do first.

Myself I just cant get myself up in the morning to do the old split workout. I like to stay slim (cut) and find that working out first (weights) and then cardio is the best way for me.

I think the above post are right though, it really depends on what you are focusing on, if you want to increase strength then do your weights first the cardio will wear your out, if you want to work on cardio conditioning then do that first and take it easy on the weights when your done.

The one thing I like to do in my combination is after I work out with weights first I like to slam something down, like a protein bar just so my body has something to munch on to help with the muscles before I spend 30 minutes sweating up a storm.

enough rambling

ok, i got a bit confused. my goal is to ultimately lose BF (through building muscles)
currently my routine is to do cardio for 15mins on the stepper or HIIT on the treadmill for 20mins. then follow by about 90mins of weights using machines or dumbells, i'm not into heavy weightlifting or body building, so my dumbells weight is about 4pounds(i use to do 3pounds like 1 week ago, so now i can lift more)

please tell me am i doing it right or wrong? i don't want to waste my time in the gym. i usually go to gym on mon, wed, friday after work.

I would never dream of doing more than my warm up before weightlifting. But then thats me. Other ppl may find uses, but I personally feel that lifting after CV is a waiste of everyones time.

Like Manokent, I think that's a little bit over kill for a 'warm-up'... I wouldn't waiste my time doing HIIT prior to lifting... I'd just do 4-5 mins of any cardio activity just to get the heart rate up a little, then lift for about an hour - hour 15 mins, AND THEN do my full cardio training....

With doing HIIT that long prior to doing your resistance training, your heart rate will drop back down especially if yoiu're only using 4 lbs dumbbells... because then if you do it AFTER your resistance training, you can get it up, and keep it up longer than what you are doing now...

neither, do them on different days

another thing i think is that the cardio before weights is good i think if your trying to lose fat and it would make more sense to do that because your muscles need to be warmed up so therefore cardio before weights depending on your goals
