Cardio on weight days

Okay, so I'd just like to get something cleared up:

I've heard from several people that you shouldn't strength train and do cardio on the same day, as the cardio will exhaust your body and inhibit muscle regeneration, making the strength training useless - is that true?
 
While it's not optimal, if one chooses to do both in a single session i'd suggest performing cardio after weight training and keep it to 20-30 min.
