Cardio, how much is too much?

Question:

Can you do too much Cardio?

If so, how much is too much?

Reason I ask is because I was considering doing HIIT both in the mornings and evenings on my off days.

Then it sounds perfect for me... until I get halfway to my goal anyway. I'm only thinking about doing the 6 minute HIIT routine to start anyway... 4 minutes warm up jog, six 30 second intervals, then 2 minutes cool down jog... I don't think that I will be too tired to move from just that... and even if I am, if it will help me reach my goal faster, I'm all about it. As I get more accustomed to running, I'll try increasing the time to 45 second intervals and finally six one minute intervals.

Not really.

1 - 5min cool down minimum! no less.
2 - you'd be far better off putting in more effort for one workout per day rather than less effort over 2 workouts.
3 - six 30sec intervals is not enough you'll only be getting your heart rate up for 90seconds per workout. there is not much point in that.

Yeah, after I posted that I read up some more on some of your HIIT routines, I think I'll just try the beginner routine, and if I can't sprint for a whole minute I'll just go as long as I can and work my way up to a minute. I also got to thinking about when I could actually do it, and there's really only one day a week that I could even manage to go in the morning and evening... so I'll do it 2x on Sundays, but only once on the other days, in the evenings... I could manage to walk on the treadmill for a few minutes on the other mornings though... which isn't much, but at least it's something.

Dont plan to run every day and twice on sundays.

This is a sure-fire way of giving up in a week or two.

Your starting off too extreme. Be a bit more realistic by starting with 3 times per week and slowly build up to every day. Otherwise the pains of not restting will build up and build up every day. You will quit within a 2 weeks.

If you start on 3imes a week you'll be getting plenty of rest, and you can be sure that you can manage it.
Dont run before you can walk - as they say.

HIIT in the morning and evening is way too much.

I, too, thought that the more cardio I did, the more weight I'd lose. I was frustrating myself doing 60-90 mins of cardio 6x/week and had hit a plateau. A consulted with a personal trainer and he said I was doing too much. He said to back my cardio down to 45-60 mins 5-6x/week max. I lost 10 pounds in the next month.

Ok, I admit I was totally wrong, and you all were right. There's no way I can do that twice a day, or even every day. I seem to remember wind sprints being a lot easier 10 years ago. Ok, I will definately cut it back to 3x per week when I'm not lifting.

I am curious to know, if I should be doing any cardio on the 3 days per week that I lift if I am doing HIIT 3x per week when I'm not lifting.
