Cardio Change up

So, you can't always believe every article you read.. online, news paper blah blah. But you can take from it and find out if it works for you..

In my case I haven't a clue what specifically works for me because I'm always changing it up. So question... If I'm on the treadmill.. what is a good change up?

The ones at my gym have all those different buttons but I don't like them much.. So I incline and walk like 3.5 at a 5 incline and then i'll change go down to 2 incline than do 4mph.. and then i'll do 1 incline and jog for a quarter or half a mile at 5.1mph.

Is this retarded, is there a better way of switching up how I use a treadmill?
(I also use another machine, not quite sure what its called.. but it has an incline you move your feet like you're rowing but you don't move your arms)
