carbs or fats

Hello Everyone! I am new to this site! I want to lose about 10 pounds, but i dont exactly know where to start. I will also be starting cardio at the gym, but i know my eating habits have alot to do with wanting to lose about 10 pounds. Should I watch the carbs or the fats in foods? Any suggestions? Im so confused :(

Watch calories, and saturated fats. Unless you are not going to be planning to burn the carbs, then dont eat too much.

Fruits and vegetables in SATURATED fats? XD

Saturated fat is found a whole lot in foods such as sweets, and basically refined foods. In the natural stuff, such as chicken, fruits, vegetables, never.

Its on the labels of foods. Just take a peek at it.

saturated fat is found in pork, red meat, egg yolks, butter, cheeses, etc.

if you really want lose weight, adopt strength training as well as cardio (weights first, then cardio)

get your heart rate up during cardio...pay no attention to the machine's 'Fat burning zone' indicator if it has one. YOu wanna be up in the cardio vascular zone...140+ heartbeats per minute.

if you really wanna know a lot about diet and what foods to eat, the book BodyRx is a good read for the nutrition info. its also a pretty good workout program too.

I agree with the others, but wanted to add that I think adopting an overall healthy eating plan is key. Once we go on a diet, we have it in our minds that someday we can STOP dieting.

It's so cliche by now, but it really is about a lifestyle change. If you decide that's a better way for you to go then consider eating 5-6 small meals/day. each meal should have a carb and a protein.

Carbs are better if they are veggies compared to cookies.

Protein is better if it is chicken compared to pork.

Water is better than soda.

I personally know how many calories I need to consume to reach my goals. Your goals will vary than someone elses. Goals can be to lose weight, gain muscle, maintain weight, etc. Once you know how many calories YOU need for YOUR goals, then you can begin working a nice meal plan.

Really once you have a number in mind and work out a sample meal plan it's easy. I once heard that the average person only eats a variety of about 18 different foods.

Good luck.

hey i was wondering about that what does the above zone mean?

thanks!

There are normally 2 "zones" on any cardio machine. The "fat burning" zone and the cardio vascular zone. The general concensus is that fat is a very "lazy" fuel and it takes less effort to burn fat effectively. My theory is that the overall caloric expenditure is more important than what zone you work in, so working harder is more beneficial. My other "conspiracy theory"ish stance is that americans on general are lazy, and if they think they can work less and get results, they're going to buy the product.

Aevans is right about the 'zones' you'll still see on a lot of cardio equipment.

I just read a few printed articles (sorry, no links) that gave great comparisons.

Say you stick to the 'fat burning' zone for 20 minutes. You burn 120 calories, 90 of which was pure fat. Pretty good percentage right?
Now do the same 20 minutes up in the 'cardiovascular' zone. You burn 240 calories, 120 was pure fat. Lower fat percentage, but more fat burned, and a larger overall calorie deficit created.

If that doesn't convince you, they also found that the 'cardiovascular' people continued to burn more calories at the basal level (increased Basal Metabolic Rate) for the next 24 hours...where the fat burning people returned to their previous BMR within 20 mins of ending the exercise.

Furthermore, the fat burning zone is far too low to provide an ample workout for your heart.
