carbs and muscle growth

so heres the thing, guys: my dad is CONVINCED that carbs are evil. He said to me today that carbs are like the number one cause for disease and bla bla bla....he says stuff about heart dissease, he says that if you eat too many it stops muscle growth and he says that you should only be eating max 50 carbs a day. I know that this is total bull$#it and when i tried to convince him otherwise, he just laughs. I just dont know what to actually tell him so that he will understand why carbs are important for building muscle and maintaining a healthy diet.

plz help

Carbs are not evil. Carbs do not make you fat. Too much of anything makes you fat-protein, fat, and carbs. Each person is different on how they tolerate carbs and what kind of carbs they tolerate. I do well on a moderate carb approach (100-150 grams a day) but get sluggish if I go above that. I think Mreik does well on a higher carb intake...don't quote me on that but I think I remember him saying he does well in the 200-300 area.

Here are two articles discussing carbohydrate needs

I remember Lyle stating from a physiological standpoint we need 0 carbs but that's not really optimal. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/Articles/howmanycarbs.html

From the article above-
Physiological requirement: 0 g/day

Practical minimum to avoid excessive muscle breakdown: 50 g/day Practical minimum for individuals who function poorly in ketosis: 100 g/day

Note: all above values assume no exercise.

Additional amount to sustain low intensity exercise: minimal approaching zero

Additional amount to sustain weight training: 5 grams carbohydrate/2 work sets

Typically recommended amounts by mainstream nutritionists: 2-3 g/lb (320-480 g/day

Let me know if you need more material.

Actually, carbohydrates are muscle sparing...there is no way that it could possibly stop muscle growth. You can show him this too:
