Can't lose weight at all !!

Hi everyone my name is Beth and I am 34 years old. I have always gone to the gym and been one of those people who has to work at staying in shape.
But about 5 years ago I slowly started to put weight on. I am now 3 stone heavier than I ever have been and 3 dress sizes bigger.

I have no idea why.
I eat 5 small meals a day consisting of fresh veg, white meat and salads. To help with my quest to lose the weight, I joined a military fitness class. Although my cardio improved greatly I still remained the same weight. So I started back at the gym with 3 sessions a week.
This still did not help so I paid for the help of a professional. He gave me a 6 day gym and exercise plan as well as a very concise diet to follow (to be honest even that was hard) but I gave it a shot. After 6 weeks I was meant to have seen a difference but nothing. I weighed exactly the same.
I have been to the Drs and had every test possible (some not so great ha) and they still have no explanation for this and to be fair don't seem to care.
I have been to see a nutritionist who has told me she can do nothing for me as I am doing everything correctly.
So I started going to the gym 5 times a week and I am still the same weight.

Please help I am at my wits end and am beginning to think going under the knife is the only way.

Can you go to and enter your values? Read the instructions below on what to do! (It's at the bottom of my post)

What the BMR is, is basically how many calories you'd need to consume to maintain weight. Of course this isn't necessary, and you could try changing your meals a little bit.

1) Can you give examples of the white meat you eat, and the quantities of each?

2) Do you use salad dressing?

3) Please write down exactly how many calories you consume at each meal, (Or at least an estimate, if you add say, like a table spoon of something (it could be under or over by a little)) and then total it up at the end of the day. It would help if you gave us that value, and then for yourself, continued doing that for the next 6 days, writing down what your caloric intake for each day is. This helps you gain insight on how much you're eating.

4) The reason I'm suggesting the above, is that you could be eating too little, or you could be eating too much. The thing with weight loss is that you can't starve yourself, and you can't over-eat. You have to find a healthy balance. A lot of the time if you go on diets, they aren't changed to body type, but are simply all-around plans, so it is possible that the diet you went on wasn't too beneficial for your plans.

If you don't wish to calculate your own BMR, you could give us your weight and height.

To use the BMR Calculator, click on the link.

*Type in your information as it is, height, weight, etc. I believe weight has to be in pounds, so remember that 1 stone = 14 pounds.

*When you click calculate, and gives you your total, you should multiply it by 1.55 and then write that number down. Also multiply it by 1.725.

*After doing that, it'd help if you gave us the information pertaining to your work-out. What kind of things you do, and for how long. This will help choose which of the two BMR's to go by.

NOTE: It may actually be better to find out how much muscle mass you have. This can have an effect on diet and weight loss. As you're also a woman...that also has more effects on the weight loss system. I see you said you've had tests done, but I'm sure there are some more members here who know more about the diets/exercise women should do, and what goals to meet. (I'm still almost clueless, I'm giving general tips.)

Thank you

Thank you for answering my thread.

My BMR is 1618.85. When multiplied by 1.55 = 2509.22 and by 1.725 = 2792.52. I hope I have done that right.
I only really eat chicken and it is always skinless. If its cooked at home it is grilled. If I buy it from the supermarket it is rotiserie cooked with no skin.
I only eat breast and if I have chicken with my meal it is a breast per meal.

I do use salad dressing occassionally but it is always low fat.
I eat about 400 - 500 calories per meal but would have to count them properly over the next few days as you have suggested.

I minaly workout the cross trainer (eliptical). I use the interval programme and work flat out for 2 mins then less for one and so on. I do this for an hour about 5 times a day.
I cannot run as I have shin splints. I do occasionally do weights but I gain muscle quite easily.
Hope this is of some help.

Does your dressing have any carbs? How many foods with carbs do you eat throughout the day? When I say keep a diary I mean that you should write down the fat, % of fat, protein, % of protein, carbs, and % of carbs for each meal. Like if you eat a can of tuna., it'd be 18% protein. (18% of standard DV) This will better help you see if there are any faults in your diet so you can shift around. It will also open you up to experimentation so you can see what your body likes the most.

How much water do you drink?

This looks okay so far. How long can you walk for? (Running is honestly one of the worst thing for your legs). Are you able to use an exercise bike?

Thank you

Ah I see what you mean. I do pay attention to most of the nutritional info but I will keep a diary to find out how much I actually eat.

I haveno problem with walking and have been known to walk over 15miles. I have access to both upright and sat down exercise bikes at the gym and on occassion I have used them but never seem to know how best to utilise them.

To best utilize them you need to find the maximum resistance you can use. Are they the nice bikes that have the up-hill, plateau, down-hill to quick long up-hill., etc. type of "Race" settings? If so you should try those, and try to find a resistance you can use for an hour!

What is your calories in vs. calories out?

Using BMR as a guide to how many calories you should eat is fine, but if you're working out regularly, watching what you eat and still not losing weight, then you're probably not burning more calories than you consume. And, unless you burn more calories than you consume, you're not going to lose weight.

Hi missDiddy2002!
Doing cardio is good but you will have to start using some light weights, too.
Weight lifting gives you more opportunity to lose weight. You burn away more calories.
The idea is to have constant burning effect. While lifting weights your body burns at least 4 times better afterward.
Great thing is to make sure your liver is fine. The only organ which breaks fat is your liver. If you take birth control pills or something else, you should consider some changing

My partner informs me that the bikes do have race settings so I think tomorrows gym session will be a bike one.

Thank you for getting back to me. Yeah I think I am going to have to right
it all down instead of guessing how much I have eaten, although I know its mainly healthy.
One problem I did forget to mention is that I do work shifts. Some of my hours are to 3am, I am sure that does not help.

I gave up the birth control last October as I realised this was not helping. After numerous blood tests (am sure my doctor is a vampire) the Dr says I am healthy.
I did do weight before but for some reason my mind does not compute that they help and I feel that if I haven't done cardio I haven't worked out.
Is that odd?

Writing it down helps - A LOT. You should start a journal here on the forum (if you haven't already) and write down what you have eaten for the day. A lot of members do that. Not only does it help you keep track of how many calories you are really eating, but it also allows other members to point out any errors you may be making - and, if they can help, they're usually pretty good about throwing in their two cents of advice.

Do you want to slim down fast for that beach vacation or high school reunion? While there are many things you can do to shed pounds, losing weight too quickly, like any sudden change to your body, can be dangerous. While fad diets, diet pills, and fasting may indeed induce rapid weight loss, these methods can cause you to get gallstones[2], start losing muscle and hair and may also injure your heart and other organs fairly quickly.

The best solution? Don't go for an overnight miracle. Instead, follow these steps to lose weight rapidly, healthily, and sustainably.

Does anyone else think you are overweight? How much do you weigh? and how tall are you? Write down everything you eat and show us - suggestion - share your meal diary and list everything you consume. Detail your exercise program in your diary too. You might not be eating enough. You might be eating too much.

I take it the doctors have ruled out
a) hypothyroidism
b) insulin resistance and diabetes - are you apple shaped?

I don't think anyone can really help you unless you provide full information.

Thats the key. You need to add some resistance traing to your exercise routine. A lot of people go to the gym and only do cardio. I notice that they stay the same all the time. The people who are doing weight training are are making slight changes overtime.

Try and use weights as much as possible with cardio and you will see the best results

consistency is more important thing in order to reduce the weight.
without consistency nothing can be done either weight gain or weight loss..
