Cannot pullup.

I cannot atm pull my self up one time, can someone give me an excersize which strengthens the pullup muscles, other than pulluping? thx.

Negative pullups, jump up to the top position of the pullup and slowly lower yourself down. you could also do some rows, its horizontal but it does work some of the same muscles aswell as pulldowns.. but i would definately do negatives for the pullups. if you jump up or use a chair to climb up or whatever. just remember to keep your shoulderblades squeezed together during the exersice.

negative pullups are good. I still suggest a concentric move though.

if you have a gym, ask if they have an assisted pull up machine, which lets you reduce bodyweight until you can do a pull up.

otherwise, shoulder width grip lat pulldowns are close to a pull up movement.

i would say that if you followed the eccentric (negative) path of the pull up then you would need to follow up with concentric movements otherwise you create a muscle imbalance. as mentioned by karky horizontal rows will develop similar muscles but i tend to think that specificity is best when trying to overcome a problem. if you had problems jumping you wouldn't take to the pool to develop your quads that are used in both swimming and jumping. so therefore, the method by malkore referring to assisted pull ups would be best.

hope this helps

definitly assisted pullups, but not all gym has those. and negative pullups is good anyways, you get "used to" your BW.. you get a feel for how heavy they are. but lat pulldowns or assisted pullups should be done too.

Assisted pullups are the way to go if you can. They helped me out a lot when I could only do a few. I'd done lat pull downs for a long time, but those never made me better at pullups. They are my favorite exercise now.

thats kinda strange that lat pull downs dint help you, its the exact same movement as pull ups hehe, weather or not you have ur grip palms toward u, or away from u, but pretty much the same thing

You use so many more stablizer muscles when you do pullups vs pulldowns though man. I mean, they help, but not as much as you would think. It's those little muscles that make the difference in compound lifts sometimes. I used to only do like 4 pullups, and now I'm doing 12-14 pullups for my first set

I agree, lat pulldowns never helped me as much as assisted (albeit partner assisted) chins. Rows also gave me a huge helping hand.

Your picture is quite misleading then merciless, we are both almost the same body weight and im doing 12+ normal grip 10 wide grip pull ups/16+ chins. I never used those machines, just did standing curls turn palms out halfway and go up over your head and then did that process in reverse and repeat... i forgot what thats called but w/e. Gravitrons should be called gayitrons, i hate them so much.

Pictures are not a good benchmark of how strong you are. Weight, Height, Arm length, etc have a lot to do with pull-ups. It is very possible that you are doing them wrong as well. Or, you could have all those advantages on your side and be pumping out that many, who knows. And by the way, replacing pull-ups with standing curls is a horrible thing to do, your lats will shrivel and die ;)

1st grab bar palms out shoulder width+ apart
2nd pull up keeping back straight
3rd repeat
Real complicated technique that can be easily cheated when you weigh 149lbs and are 5'7
Did i say replace anywhere in that post? To build up strength i told a tale of how a beautiful being(myself) built up his forearms, biceps, triceps, shoulders, and back with a single exercise and therefore was able to do pullups/chins without using a gaitron.

Merc, if you are having problems with them but still have a pullup bar at home...then grab a chair and stand on it, using your legs for assistance if you need it. Make sure you are doing them slow, squeezing your shoulderblades together, and getting a good stretch at the bottom. You will be doing pretty much the same motion as an assisted pullup that way.
