hey hows everyone doing? im a 20/male/185 lbs/6'0 and im trying to gain muscle(get big) as well as lose the fat around my stomach at the same time. according to that equation in the nutrition 101 thread i should be having around 2800 calories a day to maintain my weight and i need a surplus to gain muscle but a deficit to lose fat. im kind of lost on how i can do this and if its possible? do i have to first have a calorie deficit until i lose that weight and just tone up etc and then once i lose that weight start doing a calorie surplus and start gaining muscle? if im eating real healthy and i have a calorie surplus will i still be able to lose the fat around my stomach? im pretty active and i workout 4 times a week. any help would be very very very appreciated. thanks in advance.

Most ' average ' newbies to training can lose fat and gain muscle mass - both at the same time.

However, it is difficult to achieve significant levels of fat loss and new muscle mass at the same time - i.e shred fat asap and also pack on mass asap. at the same time The optimal approach is to focus primarily one goal and first and then the other - whichever is the higher priority for you at the moment.

Of the 2 goals - losing fat and adding muscle mass - ( if you had to choose ) which would you put more priority on ?

thanks for your response. sorry it took me so long to reply back my computer has been messign up and i finally got it working again. if i had to choose one i would pick muscle mass because through eating right(no fast food, junk food, or beer) i believe ill be abe to lose that weight aruond my stomach slowly with all the physical activity i do. so i would pick muscle mass over weight loss.

To gain muscle mass you have to be in a surplus, depending how much of a surplus, you will gain a lil fat along with muscle. But afterwards when your confident you have enough muscle, you can stop bulking and start cutting to lose the fat and show the muscle. So while your gaining that muscle, your belly isn't going to get smaller, and might even get a lil bigger.
