Butt and Abs

Hello! I am new here so bear with me! Here's a little background first.... I am 5'8" 124 lbs. I work out 3 times a week with 30 minutes of cardio and about an hour of strength training (free weights and machines). I eat about 5 small meals a day and make sure and get the protein and good carbs I need. I drink water until I just can't drink anymore....

Here is my problem... Like so many others, I can't get that lower ab toned! I eat pretty well, and frankly don't think I need to lose any weight (especially since I can't pick where it comes off!) so what are some good ab exercises that I can do to work that area better.

Also, my butt..... not in bad shape, just want it to look better! I've done squats and lunges, but am not doing it right or something bc I never really feel it like I've read you should! What else can I do?

Sorry if this is all duplicative.... just looking for some extra help! Thanks!

Cut back on the amount of time you workout and increase the intensity of it. Working out more than an hour a day typically works against you. You can head over to and get some more info about exercises.

You should feel tired on the last rep of each set. If you do that, you can increase your muscle size (so long as you are eating properly) and that will make your butt "pop".

Not everyone can have toned abs. That may be the case. I would hesitate to say anything more because I do not know how much you are eating and what exactly your workout program consists of. Overall I would say less cardio, more strength training.

Many pilates moves are great for the abdominals (especially lower)...maybe Lynn has some on her site....or you can do the infamous forearm plank.

If you have access to a gym with spinning classes. They are a great way to challenge your glutes, great leg workout and cardio!

Hi Cindi,
You can do exercises for your but and abs all day and it doesn't mean they will get the toned look you want. Lynn made good points that working out that much may not be helpful, and that not everyone will get toned abs no matter what. We all hold fat in different places, and if you hold it in your abs it may take getting to a very low body fat to get your abs to show.

That being said, you could probably knock off a bit more fat thorugh diet and exercise. The little bit you said about your diet sounds good, but a few tweaks to your diet might make a difference. Same with your workouts.

Physique made a good point with the pilates moves, as did evolution with the deadlifts. Squats and lunges are great choices too.

Hope this has been helpful. If I can help more, please let me know.

Sarah

How old are you?

I'm 41 and the sides of my stomach are toned, but I still have some poochy fat in the middle; my dr says b/c 've given birth (twice) I won't be able to get it off...

If you're young, you may still have a chance....

Trainer Lynn pointed out something great...intensity. Are you doing reps for your but and abs that take you to failure (you go until you cannot do another rep maintaining proper form). You may have just reached a plateau with your butt or abs and need to increase intensity by going to failure. Just as the others said though....everyone is different and we all have differnt bods so you may not get the abs or butt you think you should have.
Good Luck!
