Building a bike...

Im trying to build a bike for my father... he needs to move his legs once in a while but hardly can. I think a bike would be perfect. I need a design for some sort of bike pedals that are hooked up to something that give him resistance.. even just a little bit. he has to sitting in his chair.. a lazy boy because he could not fit on a bike. any help?

wow

You are really a great person for doing what you are. If you have to build a bike using a lazy boy. I dont understand. why not buy a real exercise bike. and take off the seat they give you. and put on a normal seat for him. I think taht would be the easiest way.

Some companies sell these little things (they are a mini bike) pedals etc and are used for those who need only to sit in any chair and place their feet in the straps to begin pedaling.

Might be on some late night commercials over in the States or maybe Canada, but we dont get anything like that on British TV.

The total cost of this item would be no more than about £20.00 thats about $32.26 (USD's).

Hope you find one or get to build one for your dad mate, good luck!

:)

I own 2 broken bikes and thought I could make him something outta them... The front tire is broken on one and the chain is broken on the other.. that is the only problems with these and I was hoping I could convert them into this machine. It really depresses me just watching him fade away by sitting in his chair all day.

Good idea Danny but there is no way that is possible for my father. He was born with out stomach muscles and now in his old age he has a hard time walking.. let alone climbing onto a bike. They tried some experiment when he was young by taking mucles out of his leg and putting them in his stomach... hah all it did was mess up his leg! So he basically has a dead leg and all sorts of problems.

My best of wishes

Well i am sorry for what he has had to go through. I hope he does the best he can.

But i have an idea for how to make this bad boy work. HaHa.

Put 2x4s down and put one under the chair so that when he pedals it wont tip over. Then make circle thing so that you can make it like an axel. And you can attatch 2 pedals in the middle. Like on a old big wheel things. Like that. Then just let him peddle away while he works out his hand muscles by flickin channels back 'n' forth. haha...just an idea.

Hope your gramps does the best he can w/ his life. I feel bad for a person that has to endur a life like that. It must be hard. But just be there for him and do whatever you can.

Sincerely
Danny

just an idea FuR1OuS.....cut a piece of pipe (maybe the skeleton of old bikes) the width of dad's lazy boy foot rest. cut another pipe (slightly smaller diameter) a little longer. grease up the smaller pipe. slide the smaller pipe inside the larger. take the pedals off the old bike spot-weld them to the ends of the smaller pipe.
as long as the larger pipe holds to the lazy boy and the grease keeps the rotation smooth dad should be able to pedal his way into the lazy boy olympics.
if the leg rest is too wide might consider knocking it off and replacing it with a more narrow board. this would bring the pedals in closer.
i have no friggin' idea if this would work but i am from Alabama and we are in the business of rigging things up...hahaha
if you want to add resistance run one of those resistance bands (giant rubber bands) from each pedal and then back to the chair.
good luck and God bless

I have been looking at various recumbent bike today and saw this. It really seems to be what you were discribing for your needs.

I know nothing about this product or the company that is selling it. But it seems like it fit the bill for your needs.
