Broken Elbow/Pins etc

Hi,
Basically I broke my elbow very badly 10 years ago it had to be cut open and oeprated on with pins inserted, about 6 years after that it was rebroken because some of the bones had grown back slightly bent. This time the pins were left inside, i have some limited motion and my elbow doesnt allow my forearm to bend past abotu 90 degrees when pulling up to my shoulder. Id always let this put me off weight training but over the past year ive gotten really into it and build up a decent amount of muscle however i do get twinges and aches in this arm sometimes, anyone know anyone in a similar situation thats went on to weight train?

Hi Stewart,

I am in a similar situation to you. When I was 8 y/o I smashed my elbow requiring a week in hospital, operations, pins etc. The Doc said I was extremely lucky to retain full movement.

I have been training solidly for the past year (and on and off beforehand) including strength training and have had zero problems with my elbow thankfully. It was something that I was concerned about initially as all I have to do is flex my bicep and I can feel a slight pain in my elbow and it tends to play up every now and then (cold weather seems to trigger it) however it has caused no problems whatsoever while training. I have a feeling (although nothing I can prove) that it has actually strengthened if anything. I am now bench pressing 120kg's.

Not exactly the same situation I admit, your situation sounds more severe than mine however maybe you can take something from it. Regardless, probably best to check with the doc before going too hard.

I have a scar on my elbow that looks exactly like the Nike swoosh....you can't pay for that type of advertising! :p
