Breaking the Vicious Cycle of Fitness Failure

There are no "miracle tips" or secret formulas to being healthy and staying fit. Anyone that says that there are is trying to sell you something. There are an infinite numbers of ways to lose weight and achieve fitness, some may work better than others for certain people, but there is no secret formula or right or wrong way to go about it. First off, you need to clarify your personal fitness goals so you can take a logical systematic approach to achieving them. Having said that, health and fitness is an ongoing process that can never be 100% "achieved". Staying healthy and fit is uniquely relative to each individual and is something that must become a way of life to work correctly. The problem most people have is that they interpret physical health as looking thin. So they look for the easiest way to lose a lot of weight real quick and when they are satisfied by how they look in the mirror, they believe the hard work is over. That eventually leads to a gradual routine shift of not staying on top of their diet and exercising less and less as time goes by until one day they look in the mirror and they're out of shape and unhappy with the way they look. The problem is internal. While feeling healthy and looking fit will without a doubt promote a happier sense of being, if we are not content with our true, inner self, we will be caught in a vicious cycle of failure. So find your center and break the cycle!

Good post. I read Tom Venuto's "The Body Fat Solution". This book changed my life in terms of achieving my target weight/appearance (which I have not yet achieved, but am enjoying the journey).

In Tom Venuto's book, it takes almost half of the book to start talking about nutrition and exercise. The 1st half goes into great detail about mental strength. If you are not happy with your body as is, you will not reach the goals you desire. If you are happy with what you see, you are tricking your body into working toward a healthier physique.

An example is when you see those "before and after" pictures on websites promoting the next miracle diet/etc. These pictures of large lumpy women beautifully transformed are actually picture of body builders just after giving birth. The after picture is once they have given birth, they get back to their normal routine which takes them no time at all.

It is unhealthy to want to model yourself on those model thin bodies.

Uhm, I don't quite get it. If I am not happy with my body as it is, I won't reach the goals I desire, but if I like what I see, I will trick my body into working towards a healthier physique?

Sorry, but that makes no sense to me. If I was happy with what I see, why would I want to change in the first place? And how would being happy with my body trick it into anything?

One of my main reasons to lose weight is because I don't like what I see, and want to change it. If I liked my body as it is, I wouldn't bother. I can't quite figure out the logic behind looking at it the other way around.

Also, those pictures of miracle weight loss cures are usually fake (photoshopped or actually two different people), but even more often they are stolen from people who put a lot of work, sweat and probably tears into weight loss that took them years. We had pictures stolen from the before and after section of this forum, and used for dodgy weight loss advertisments.
