boxing and trying to bulk up

i wanted to know if i would be overtraining if i box for an hour the same day i lift..i would lift weights at like 4:00 pm then box at like 7:00 pm...or should i do it on days i dont lift? if i hit my legs and core on monday then box on tuesday wouldnt that be too much since im pretty sure i work my legs and core while i box?

Well, if you are trying to bulk, lifting and boxing on the same day is not the best way to do it. You will be burning a massive amount of calories that day, you would have to eat a ton to keep up with it and still make gains.

Is it over-training? No, unless you are doing this every day. Sounds like you are doing an upper-lower split for your workouts? If that is the case try this Day 1 - box, Day 2 - lower, day 3 - upper, day 4 - rest.

Are you a competitive boxer? If not I would drop it while you bulk, at least drop it to 15-20 min sessions.

I have to agree with Crazylegs, it's not a good idea to work out and then box a bit later, well after work out try to get some rest since muscles grow faster. ;)

Depends on what weight devision that you want to be in.
I remember reading about Hatton the little english lad that beat Kosta Zu for the I think wealter weight title, he did lots of weights and boxing and all on same days. His reasoning is that he wouldn't gain mass because of doing his sparring on the same day. He found that even though he didn't get bigger he got comsiderably strong and inturn is one of the strongest in his weight division.
So if you want to gain mass, do it on different days; but if you need to stay in with a certain weight you can do it on the same day.

im around 190 right now. i just want to gain about 10 more lbs of muscle. then ill cut back down to 185ish.

I wouldn't box after weights.A weight workout is supposed to break your muscles down a bit and the period after training is reserved for recovery.Your muscles won't be given a chance to recover from a weight workout if you are going hard on the bags, mitts and in the ring.

Unless you have above average recovery ability I would split the two up and I would also move to an abbreviated weight program if you are going to be doing both activities, even on seperate days.

If you're going to compete, then I'd say boxing should be your main concern. Do full body workouts on your off days. Eat enough and you will gain size.

i agree with Evolution. i'm on the boxing team at my university and they stressed that weight-lifting be kept to a minimum when you're training to box competitively. if anything, doing lesser weights with higher reps would be good to increase the endurance that you're definately going to need in the ring.

good luck with that.

weight lifting will give you more mass and stopping force, but boxing can give you everything else.
I'd choose weight training over padwork anyday,
but if you got the chance to spar with a partner, or do any partnered exercise then go for that. You'll get so much more out of it.

That is, unless you are a complete newb and have to idea what you're doing, in which case you're only going to reenforce your bad habits.

If you already know how to box, then great. But weight lifting should only supplement it. So...do it accordingly, like the way Crazylegs and evolution suggested.

I normally find if I have worked out properly, to my max potential, then my part of body I have worked out will be weak afterwards, I feel a little shakey and will need food to feel better. I don't know about anyone else, but my main concern about boxing three hours after starting a session is the fact that if I spar with someone, i'll get nowhere I'll be that tired...

If you really have to do both on the same day, try and box beforehand...otherwise I suggest you workout a little earlier than 4 pm...

only my opinion though...

I've been training in muay thai for quite some time and nobody I know does core exercises (weight training) on the same day as their martial arts training. The idea is to do certain exercises almost daily, with martial arts training and core exercises occuring on alternating days.

A sample schedule might be:

M, W, F
Warm-up
Flexibility
Torso-stabilization exercises
Joint-Stabilization exercises
Core exercises
Anaerobic training

Tu, Th, Sa
Warm-up
Flexibility
Muay Thai training
Torso-stabilization exercises
Joint-stabilization exercises
Aerobic training

This is of course a highly idealized workout plan, but it's essentially what I do most of the year. If you're wondering what I mean by anaerobic training, think interval or hill sprints (at your level).

Thats rubbish.
I do martial arts every day, and weight train 2 in 3 days. I understand how weight training before practicing martial arts can hinder you. But doing martial arts before weight training is fine. There is no reason why you cant do that other that the amount of time you want to put in.
